Fantasy Quick Hits Week 12 Edition by Mark Riley Jr

After a somewhat hiatus I'm back to bring you my picks for your waiver wire consideration. With the bye weeks gone it's time to gear up for the playoffs, make that push out of the middle of the pack or build for next year. So without further delay here are my top 5 picks for Week 12:

1. Kevin Smith, RB, Detroit Lions - He literally was signed off the street a few weeks ago and went over 200 total yards against a weak Panthers D. With his pass catching skills he'll still be able to put up some numbers against the Packers. If Best is still out, he'll have the Saints, Vikings and Raiders after the Packers.

2. Toby Gerhart, RB, Minnesota Vikings - With Adrian Peterson out with a High Ankle Sprain, Gerhart will get the start and a full load against the Falcons. Even though they sport the 2nd best run D in the league, all you need is one play to go from dud to stud in fantasy football. One thing he brings to the offense in addition to his legs is that he can catch out of the backfield too.

3. C.J. Spiller, RB, Buffalo Bills - Well the Bills straight up suck right now. Their best player is dealing with a calf injury and if the Bills are smart they'll rest Fred Jackson and let Spiller tote the rock this week. A plus to this add is that he qualifies at WR as well so you can throw him anywhere. Keep in mind they are playing the Jets so don't expect too much and Jackson's status could be a game time decision.

4. Jerome Simpson, WR, Cincinnati Bengals - He stepped up big with A.J. Green out for the week. It felt like Week 2 in Denver all over again (4 catches, 136 yards against them). Playing against the dreadful Browns will definitely give him some looks out in the open. Even if Green plays, Simpson makes a low level flex option or a WR3 on some teams.

5. Kyle Orton, QB, Broncos as of now - He was just put on waivers and there's a few teams out there that can use him. Kansas City, after losing Cassel, would be a good place to go. Another is a possible reunion in Chicago now that Jay Cutler is out for the season (the same man they traded him for!). With the Bears he definitely has a chance to win and is pretty much trying out for a contract next year. Also, how you can have Caleb Hanie lead you to the promise land?

Week 9 Fantasy Quick Hit Pickups by Mark Riley

Going to jump right in this and a few of my favorite pick ups for Week 9.

Chris Ogbonnaya RB, Cleveland Browns - Love the name and could be an option in deeper leagues if Hillis isn't ready to go and Hardesty too. Don't expect too much from him.

Antonio Brown WR, Pittsburgh Steelers - Had a crazy amount of targets against the Patriots and if he's still out there on your waiver then go grab him. If Ward misses another game, expect more of the same with Emmanuel Sanders trailing behind him.

Jake Ballard TE, New York Giants - Starting to receive more targets now and would have had a even bigger day had he not dropped that pass (Almost dropped my drink when I saw that!). I'm not expecting him to be the second coming of Shockey but he will do nice as a bye week fill-in.

Curtis Brinkley RB, San Diego Chargers - Ryan Matthews can't stay on the field for the life of me and that led to CB44 leaping over everyone (including his own linemen!). He was a big part of SD coming back in the 4th (no thanks to Rivers botching that snap smh). Could be out after suffering a concussion so I say deep leagues only (don't get cute shallow leaguers).

Lance Ball RB, Denver Broncos - Did pretty well in a time share with Knowshon Moreno. With McGahee missing another week or two I can see Ball getting more carries as there was a reason Moreno lost his job in the first place.

Kevin Walter WR, Houston Texans - He's nothing spectacular but he has been getting a lot of targets with Andre Johnson out. If Johnson misses another game then look for 6-7 catches and about 70 yards.

Darrius Heyward-Bey WR, Oakland Raiders - He's been turning it out since coming back from injury and is their best receiver and I think he'll get a good amount of opportunities to showcase that world class speed.

After a lull in UFC action, we get back to it with a card that has been seen more changes than a newborn baby. Sorry, I just got done talking to my sister about my nephew that's growing inside of her. Anybody else think of that scene from Alien when the face huger bursts out of that poor dudes gut anytime they think of pregnancies? Or is it just me? Just me? Moving on...

This card was originally supposed to be champion versus champion. Nick Diaz, the Strikeforce Champion, making his triumphant return to face arguably the greatest welterweight champion of all time GSP. With a stellar co-main event featuring Carlos Condit and B.J. Penn, likely for the #1 contender spot, this looked like one of the year's best cards. The Diaz had to go mess things up by no showing two press conferences leading up to the event. This pissed off Dana White something fierce, and you do NOT want to piss of Dana White something fierce. He's like the Incredible Hulk, if Hulk was white, skinny, and bald. So Condit was bumped up to the Championship fight and Diaz was punished(?) by sliding into the co-main event slot against Baby Jay, a fight many had been salivating over for years.

So we're good right? Still a stellar card. Wrong. WRONG! GSP then went and pissed in everybody's Cornflakes by spraining his knee and pulling out. I'm not saying GSP should have manned up and fought. But I am saying Hall of Fame offensive lineman Jack Youngblood played the entire 1979 playoffs, including Super Bowl XIV and the freakin Pro Bowl with a broken fibula. I'm not saying George Saint Pierre is less man than Jack Youngblood. As the kids like to put on Facebook, IJSing...

So after Condit decided to wait out GSP's injury for his title shot, we're still left with a pretty damn good card. Now sit back and let me cook you a UFC 137 preview. Ingredients: a heaping of the obvious, a dash of crap I find on Wikipedia, and a liberal sprinkling of humor and pop culture references that few will laugh at and even fewer will get.

Jeff Curran vs. Scott Jorgensen

To say Jeff Curran (33-13-1) is a journeyman is an understatement. He's one of those fight anywhere against anybody kind of fighters that you just have to respect. He's fought all over the world, in a plethora of different organizations. I'm not sure if I used that word right, but it was excuse to reference The Three Amigos. He's battled against some of the best in the world, competing in the Bantam, Feather, and Lightweight divisions in organisations ranging from the bright lights of the UFC and WEC, to somewhat less prestigious HooknShoot and Chicago Challenge promotions (don't bother looking for their Wikipedia page). Dude's got a 2nd degree BJJ black belt and 19 of his wins have come by tapout. Expect him to try and take this to the mat early and often. He's won four of his last five fights, but this is likely a one and done deal with the UFC if he losses.

Let's just get this out of the way from the start: Those white blotches on Scott Jorgensen's (12-4) aren't burns. It's vitiligo, a condition that causes depigmentation of sections of skin. Michael Jackson had it. Now that that's out of the way, let's focus on the baddass that is Scott Jorgensen. Two fights ago he challenged Bantamweight kingpin Dominick Cruz, losing by lopsided decision. He came back and KOed out Billy Vaughn in his last fight, and looks to continue his momentum toward another title shot. He's been wrestling since the third grade, and continued in college, wrestling for Boise State (I'd assume their wrestling mats are blue) and was a 3 time NCAA Pac-10 champ. Clearly his wrestling is top notch, and his striking is starting to come around as well. Look for him to show off his striking and keep this fight standing.

I'd love to see Curran pull off some crazy submission and get the win so he can stick around the UFC for a while. I'd also love for the neighborhood ice cream man to move in next door to me, but it's probably not going to happen. Jorgenson uses his stand up and speed to turn Curran's face into hamburger and get's the UD.

Scott Jorgensen via Unanimous Decision

Hatsu Hioki vs. George Roop

Six months ago, Hatsu Hioki (24-4-2) was near the top of Zuffa's wish list of fighters not currently under the Zuffa umbrella. Well, here he is. The #2 ranked Featherweight in the world is fighting in the UFC, fighting in America. History my friends, history. Plenty of fighters who made their bones in Japan have come to the UFC or other big time promotions only to get beaten and beaten badly. Takanori Gomi. Yoshihiro Akiyama. Michihiro Omigawa. Marlon Sandro. Maximo Blanco. All huge names in Japan. All floundered fighting in the States. Do I think Hioki will do the same? I hope not. And Hioki has the skills to make a run at the Featherweight title. He's a BJJ black belt and holds 12 wins by submission. He's fast, smart, and the coaches at Tri-Star will help him formulate a good game plan going into this bout. he holds wins over notable American fighters Mark Hominick (x2) and Jeff Curran. And while a tough opponent, Roop isn't exactly a highly ranked fighter. So everything is in place for him to break the Japanese Curse.

George Roop (12-7-1) is, as you probably inferred from his record, a bit inconsistent. Alternating wins and losses with a draw thrown in for good measure since 2008, he won his last fight against Josh Grispi by KO. Honestly, Roop kicked the shit out of him from the opening bell. Good on him. He's gone 2-1-1 in his last four, and a win against a top ranked opponent like Hioki would help his career significantly. A loss, and it's back to fighting on the unaired prelims.

Based on everything I've previously stated, you might expect a Roop win to not be a huge upset. According to Las Vegas it would be, they have Hioki going off as a 3.5-1 favorite. Lord knows the bookies have taken enough of my money for me to not argue against them, so I'll take Hioki to break the curse and win his American debut. But with Roop going off as a +250 underdog, I'd say he's worth throwing a few clams on...

Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic vs. Roy Nelson

Roy Nelson (15-6) is fat. Let's just get that out of the way. Between his belly pouring over his shorts like pizza dough and his moobies (Man-Boobies), he's a mullet wearing fatty fat fat. I know it, you know it, and the American Heart Association knows it. And you know what? He doesn't give a shit. Just. Straight. Does not. Give. A shit. He's like the honeybadger in that regard. But don't get it twisted, dude's a legit heavyweight fighter. He's fought the best in the world and lived to tell about it. Equipped with a Gracie JJ black belt and knockout power in both hands, he's not one to sleep on. Even if he does look like a younger Santa Clause.

Mirko Cro Cop (27-9), on the other hand, looks like an Eastern European cyborg from the future sent back in time to kill us one head kick at a time. Seriously, the guy collects head kick KOs like Lindsey Lohan collects herpes. Don't believe me, check this out. He punched a guy so hard in the face, he made him cry. He made this guy cry. Unfortunately, Cro Cop is another fighter that made his reputation in Japan but hasn't had the same success in the UFC. He's gone 3-3 in the UFC, including back to back nighty night sleep tight don't let the bed bugs bite KOs (he got punched unconscious, is what I'm trying to say).

Both these guys are in desperate need of a win. A Nelson loss would likely mean his release from the UFC. A Cro Cop loss would mean the end of his legendary career. The former Pride Grand Prix champion has talked openly about retirement the last few years, and might hang up his checkboard shorts with or without a win. Unfortunately, I think Mirko is going out on a loss. In an exciting fight, I'm going with Nelson by KO.

Cheick Kongo vs. Matt Mitrione

Let's move onto the co-main event, another heavyweight tilt. This one featuring an accomplished kickboxer trying to find some consistency and another up and comer trying to take the next step up the mountain.

Cheick Kongo(25-6-2) punches hard. He kicks hard too. Matter of fact, anytime the dude lays hands and feet to somebody, they usually fall down or go to sleep or say "ouch". The former French kickboxing champion is also one of the dirtiest fighters in the game. Like Ric Flair (Whooooooooo!), but he's actually making foot to ball sack contact. Seriously, Google "Cheick Kongo Is..." and the first thing that pops up is "..a dirty fighter", followed by "... is gay" for some reason. He won his last fight in dramatic fashion. After getting beaten into a living death by Pat Barry for the majority of their fight, he managed to connect with a Hail Marry combo that put Barry on dream street. He has the striking to win this fight, but does he have the ground game to keep it standing? Either way, he's in desperate need of some consistency in a division where 3 or 4 good wins might get you a title shot.

Matt Mitrione likes to smile. Google his picture and you'd be hard pressed to find one where he's not smiling. He'll get punched in the face and smile. He'll punch you in the face and smile. He'll smile during the pre-fight intro. But he doesn't smile after a loss. Why? Because he hasn't lost yet. Sitting at a perfect 6-0, he's fought all of his fights in the UFC, coming off of season 10 of The Ultimate Fighter. His opponents have gotten progressively better for the former NFL lineman, but he has responded by defeating them all decisively finishing five of his six opponents. Is he ready for the next step?

Kongo is kind of a gatekeeper for the division. If you can beat him, probably ready for the next tier of HW competition. If not, it's back to the prelims until you get your shit together. Is "Meathead" ready for that next step? Eh, I'm not sure. This is a coin flip in my mind. Kongo could KO him, but if he rocks Mitrione with a good shot looks for him to try and take the Frenchman down in a hurry. I'll go with the faster fighter in this one, but look for it to be Fight of the Night. Also, a fun drinking game: Take a shot every time Kongo get's warned by the referee for grabbing the fence or Mitrione's shorts, a nut shot, or eye gouge. Double shot if he gets a point taken away. That should get you good and smashed.

Nick Diaz vs. B.J. Penn

I'm going to geek out here for a second. This is a fight I've been waiting for, for a long long time. These two fighters have an absolutely sick ground game, and are both very good strikers. They come to fight every time and are never in boring fights. This has the potential to not only be fight of the night, but fight of the year. The fact it's only a three rounder is a crime, but it is what it is.

Nick Diaz (25-7)is underrated. Nick Diaz is overrated. Nick Diaz is an immature, unprofessional pothead. Nick Diaz is a misunderstood pothead. Say what you want, he's heard it all before. Bottom line, dude loves to scrap. If this was the wild west, he'd travel from town to town challenging other gunslingers to a duel. He lives to fight and fights to live. The former Strikeforce champed dominated all in the promotion. Problem is, the "all" he dominated weren't exactly the cream of the crop. Matter of fact, the only fighter you could make an argument for being a top 10 welterweight was Paul Daley, and he was fringe top 10 at best. Needless to say, B.J. Penn represents the biggest challenge he's faced in some time. For the last few years he's clamored to fight the best in the world and receive the big bucks that come with big fights. On Saturday night, he's got his chance.

What more can be said about B.J. Penn (16-7)? The first two division champion in UFC history. The most dominant Lightweight Champion of all time. His resume goes on and on. His legacy is secure. He'll go down as one of the best pound for pound fighters ever. At this point he's fighting for the challenge, to add one more belt to his collection. After failing to win back the Lightweight Championship from Frankie Edgar, he moved up to the welterweight division and KOed the legendary Matt Hughes in 21 seconds, then fought the #2 ranked welterweight Jon Fitch to a draw. A win against Diaz would make a statement in his quest for a third fight with current champ GSP.

These two are pretty evenly match. But everything Diaz does, Penn does just a liiiiitle bit better. Diaz has no issue with taking a few punches in order to deliver one and Penn will be more then happy to oblige him. Diaz is a great BJJ practitioner, but Penn was the first non-Brazilian to win gold in the black belt division at the Mundial World Championship (that's a big deal, just trust me on that). The only shot I see Diaz as having, is his cardio. The guy does triathlons for crying out loud. He's got the gas tank to go for days, and Penn has had suspect cardio in the past. If Diaz can push the pace from the get go and wear down Penn, he's got a chance to catch him in the third. Both have solid chins and probably cancel each other out on the ground. I'm expecting Penn to dominate the first two rounds and hold off a late rally by Diaz to get the decision victory in a highly exciting fight.

And there you have it, another preview for what should be a very entertaining card. And since it's Halloween weekend, and therefor the season of giving, I'll leave you without something that is sure to make your Halloween party even better: My recipe for Rummy Bears

Waiver Wire Madness for Week 8 by Mark Riley

We had a lot of big time players and duds in week 7. There were some crucial injuries to Earnest Graham, Tim Hightower, Darren McFadden and Beanie Wells to name a few. With that here are my favorite pickups for this upcoming week:

RB - DeMarco Murray - Needless to say why he's going to be the number 1 waiver pickup. He'll get another favorable matchup against the Eagles D.

RB - Ryan Torain - I know a Mike Shanahan inspired teams featured a carousel of potential breakout at the RB position. With the potential season ending injury to Tim Hightower, this opens up more carries for Torain who before Hightower went down barely got any on field time during the game. Take a flier on him or Roy Helu.

RB - Michael Bush - He shouldn't be available in too many leagues but if he is you might want to stash him early even though the Raiders have the bye this week. If they decide to give Run DMC some time to heal (bad history of foot injuries), they'll give the ball to Bush against the Broncos.

WR - Michael Jenkins - With Percy Harvin going down with a rib injury, Jenkins hooked up with Ponder for 3 receptions and 111 yards with a TD. The Vikings will get the Panthers next so he could be an interesting fill in.

WR - Antonio Brown - Hines Ward left with an injury which opened up more touches for Brown. He caught 7 out of 9 passes thrown his way and finished with 102 yards receiving. Emmanuel Sanders also had a decent game with 5 receptions for 46 yards and a TD. One of these two will benefit from Ward being out but my money is on Brown who's look better this year.

WR - Demaryius Thomas - With Brandon Lloyd gone, Sweet Timmy Jesus threw to Thomas 10 times but was only able to grab 3 of them with one being for a nice TD. I think we're looking at the chosen one for Tebow's throws.

TE - Fred Davis - Cooley is out and so is Santana Moss for an extended time. That means more looks for Davis who ended the game with 6 receptions for 80 yards and a TD. He'll match up against the Bills and can look to duplicate the same production.

Four Downs Week 5 by Mark Riley

First Down -Jets go into Foxboro and fall to the Patriots – Brady 321 yards and a TD. Jets D lets Benjarvus Green-Ellis aka the Law Firm run for 150 and 2 scores. Welker has no problems on Revis Island (5 Rec 124 yards). Sanchez fails to get over 200 yards passing. Unused Mason traded to Texans. Third straight loss for Jets.

The Andrew Luck Sweepstakes continue again as the Colts lose a close one to the Chiefs. Curtis Painter showed up this game and tossed for 2 TD’s and even though he didn’t convert during the crucial 4^th and 6, he looked better. Matt Cassell on the other hand played very well as he threw for 4 TD’s and hooking up with Dwayne Bowe twice including an acrobatic catch in the end zone. Coming out of obscurity, RB Jackie Battle who only had about 16 carries all of last year got 19 of them this game along with 112 yards.

Second Down - Heartbreaking game for my G-men as they fell to the Seahawks. Things didn’t start off well when Marshawn Lynch, who hasn’t been doing much of anything offensively, broke a 47 yard TD run. Tarvaris Jackson left with an injury and then it turned into the Whitehurst and Baldwin show. The Giants D has been so bad this year due to injuries it’s hard for them to stop anyone. Victor Cruz was able to keep them in the game with his array of acrobatic catches. Unfortunately, he was trying to make one too many and ended up turning it into a Seahawk pick 6. Giants have the weapons but the turnovers and defense are killing them.

The Green Bay Packers won their rematch with the Falcons from last year’s playoff game. Same result as the Packers walked away with the W. Aaron Rodgers keeps proving why he should be the MVP of the league this year. He’s playing lights out football and he’s spreading the ball around to everyone. The running game still needs some work but they are definitely the team to beat this year.

Third Down -Emotions were running high following the passing of Al Davis and I’m sure everyone on the Raiders team were playing with heavy hearts. The Raiders were able to stave off a late comeback by the Texans and picked off Schaub in the end zone. During the game, the Texans lost Mario Williams for the season with a torn pectoral muscle. His presence and big play ability will be missed on the defensive end.

Tebow Time finally came in the second half against the Chargers and it almost led to a win. Even though he went 4-10 with 79 yards, he did rush for a TD and was a hail mary away from winning it. He is now the starter and it’ll be pretty interesting to see how much he’s learned up until now. I know Kyle Orton will be happy once his contract is up.

Big Ben showed his toughness against the Titans as he put up 5 TD’s against the hapless D of the Titans. He also brought back Hines Ward from the dead as he hooked up with him for 2 of those 5 TD’s. Even without James Harrison the D still had Polamalu and contained CJ2k to only 51 yards rushing.

Fourth Down - My top five waiver wire adds for Week 6 are: QB Tim Tebow, RB Jackie Battle, RB Ryan Torain, RB Earnest Graham and WR Darius Heyward-Bey

My 180 on Timmy

As you all know, Tim Tebow was named the Broncos starting QB. People are wondering, can this move turnaround the Broncos season?, Can Tim Tebow be a NFL franchise QB?, Will the Broncos start producing game-day programs with bible verses?. I didn’t think so and I been saying that since his Gator days. I didn’t think he had the arm strength, technique, pocket presence and frankly, his superman act was not gonna work in the NFL.

Why the John Kerry flip flop?... Because I just realize this man is a gamer. When it comes to the football field, Tebow doesn't give a fuck, He'll dip that shoulder to crush a linebacker for that first down. Winner? Ha! Dude was the best player & leader of the Florida Gators back to back National Championships, this is folklore. You gotta love Timmy’s determination, He spent countless hours/days/weeks/months and now more than year on a new throwing technique. The man is a leader with a football or bible (haha, sorry), Just like Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Ray Lewis or whoever else you think is the best out there. I know he receives a lot hate because of his beliefs. Guess what, he doesn't care, nor should he.

I know I just finished getting on my knees for Tebow but that doesn't mean I'm sure he gonna become a godly QB (I'm such an asshole). But no matter what level he played on, Good things happen when the football is in Tebow's hands and this move will definitely provide Broncos fans with faith (No pun intended) in a suddenly dying season.

*I even dropped Jay Culter off my fantasy team to pick up Tim Tebow. Then again, that's not saying much*

Start 'Em N' Sit 'Em - Week 5

Preview- UFC 136: Edgar vs Maynard III

How 'bout them free fights last weekend? Had a little bit of everything: submissions, knockouts, and epic battles with some of the best athletes on the planet. Those bantamweights are pretty fast, to say the least. I've seen tweakers running from the cops move slower. I had to rewind the fight and watch it in slow motion just to keep up. That's an exaggeration of course, I can't afford Tivo. Now that everybody knows I'm poor, let's take a look at this weekends lineup.

We conclude a run of three straight fight weekends with a title fight double header. Both the Lightweight and Featherweight titles are on the line Saturday night, along with a Middleweight Title eliminator. So like a doobie of knowledge, allow me to puff puff pass (always to the right, don't fuck up the rotation) everything you need to know about this weekend's main card fights.

Leonard Garcia vs. Nam Phan

If you don't know who Leonard Garcia (15-7-1) is, let me fill you in. He's a brawler, who likes to swing for the fences with every punch. Tough as nails. Always moving forward. And apparently has a lucky rabbit's foot AND a horseshoe stuck up his ass. This man has been awarded more judge's decisions that he didn't deserve then anybody in MMA. Don't believe me? Look up his fights with Jung Chan-Sung, Jameel Massouh, George Roop, and most recently Nam Phan himself. All fights he should have lost. All fights he didn't lose. In Garcia's last fight, Chan-Sung was able to exact some revenge by submitting the former WEC contender. Nam Phan will be looking to keep it out of the judges hands as well.

Nam Phan (16-9) was a contestant on season 12 of The Ultimate Fighter losing by close split decision to eventual runner up Micheal Johnson in the semi-finals. He's had two fights in the UFC since then; the aforementioned screw job against Garcia and a unanimous decision loss to former Featherweight Champion Mike Brown. The Vietnamese-American probably isn't in danger of getting cut if he loses, but it certainly wouldn't help his case.

While Garcia is a brawler, Phan is a much more technical striker. This fight will probably look similar to their first encounter: Phan using pin point striking and avoiding Garcia's wild haymakers. That should be enough to get Phan the win. Should be. Best bet for Phan would be to use his underrated ground game to put Garcia on his back, since judges seem to have a hard on for takedowns as much as they do for wild punches that don't land. Look for Phan to get a lopsided unanimous decision, unless Garcia lucks out again.

Melvin Guillard vs. Joe Lauzon

The "Young Assassin" Melvin Guillard (29-8-2-1) has been on an absolute tear since joining Greg Jackson's camp. He's finally seems to be putting all of his talents together and keeping his head straight. Since going under the tutelage of Jackson, he's run off five straight wins and has looked better and better each time out. He now finds himself on the cusp of a title shot, but standing in his way is the tough veteran Joe Lauzon (20-6).
Guillard's bread and butter has been his striking. He has perhaps the most power in the lightweight division, but his achilles heal has always been his submission defense, an area Lauzon is most adept at. Five of his seven victories inside the octagon have come by submission.

Lauzon burst onto the scene way back in 2006, upsetting former Lightweight Champion Jens Pulver by knockout in the first minute of the fight. Since then he's gone 6-3, but hasn't been able to put the wins together to get him into the upper echelon of the division. A win against a top 10 fighter like Guillard would be his biggest win since the Pulver fight.

This is a very dangerous fight for Guillard. Not only is he oh so close to a title shot, but he's going against a fighter that isn't ranked anywhere near him. The only reason Guillard took this bout was his insistence on fighting in front of the Houston crowd, his self proclaimed second home. A loss against Lauzon would move him to the back of the pack in a stacked lightweight division. He needs to keep this fight standing, and if he's improved his take down defense and scrambling abilities, not to mention his often maligned submission defense, he should take this. I'm picking upset though, expecting Lauzon to get this fight to the ground as soon as possible and slap on an armbar. At a +275 underdog, might be smart to place a bet on him. For entertainment purposes only, of course.

Chael Sonnen vs. Brian Stann

I'm going to start this off right away by saying I don't like Chael Sonnen (25-11). I find him a disrespectful (Google Chael Sonnen talks Brazil), lying cheat (tested positive for PEDs, lied about it to the Nevada Athletic commision). He's also a criminal (mortage fraud) and a rat (snitched on his partners to avoid jail time). However, some people enjoy his antics and defend him at every turn. I don't know how, but probably the same way people think Dane Cook is funny.

Regardless, you can't discredit what he has done in his last four fights. After dominating Dan Miller, he upset consecutive top 5 middleweights Yushin Okami and Nate Marquardt before taking Middleweight Champion, the best fighter on the planet, to the brink. He dominated the first 23 minutes of their title fight, before choking like the Bills in the Super Bowl and losing via triangle armbar in the last two minutes. After a 14 month absence due to the aforementioned legal issues he returns against Brian Stann (11-3), the winner likely to get a title shot.

Brian Stann is a goddamned American Hero. He's a former Marine who won the WEC Light-Heavyweight Title, while he was serving in Iraq. He won a Silver Star the year before. The guy already has his place in the Badass Hall of Fame. After going 2-2 in the UFC's light-heavyweight division, he dropped down to middleweight and has since won three straight, including knockout victories over Chris Leben and top 10 Jorge Santiago. Now on the brink of a title shot, he faces his toughest test to date in Sonnen.

Sonnen has the best wrestling in the division. He was an accomplished collegiate Greco-Roman wrestler before he even began wrestling, and he has used those skills to grind his way to the (almost) top of the middleweight division. His stand up is a little lackluster, and his submission defense is porous at best. Stann has great all around skills, but he prefers to keep the fight standing so he can utilize his knock out power. If it stays standing, it'll be a short night for Sonnen. And nothing would make me happier then to see him knock that smug face of Sonnen int.....sorry, got a little carried away there. Unfortunately, good does not always defeat evil. Sometimes the darkness overwhelms the light. Sometimes a world class douche bag takes down an American Hero and grinds out a unanimous decision. I expect this to be one of those times.

Jose Aldo(c) vs. Kenny Florian

Featherweight Championship

Next up, the first of two title fights, this one pitting the Brazilian monster Jose Aldo (19-1) against a fighter from the first season of The Ultimate Fighter, Kenny Florian (15-5). Aldo is trying to build on his growing legacy, while Florian wants to add the only thing missing from an otherwise distinguished career: a UFC Title.

Jose Aldo is an absolute beast. He's one of the top pound for pound fighters in the world, and hasn't lost in the featherweight division. His striking is other worldly, while his rarely used ground game is top notch. He can win any fight, no matter where it goes. In his last fight, he successfully defended his title against tough veteran Mark Hominick. He'll be looking to win his 13th fight in a row.

Kenny Florian: Always a bridesmaid, never a bride. He fought twice before for the Lightweight Title, losing to Sean Sherk and B.J. Penn respectively. He was dominated in those fights, leading some to speculate whether or not KenFlo has what it takes to perform when the lights are brightest. A win against one of the best fighters on the planet would go a long way toward dispelling that opinion. After a loss to lightweight contender Gray Maynard, he dropped to featherweight in hopes of capturing the title that has so far eluded him. Although he did beat Diego Nunes in his division debut, he hardly looked like a world beater. For him to have a chance, he'll have to show up in Houston as the best Kenny Florian anybody has every seen.

Florian's striking is leaps and bounds better then what it was when compared to his tenure on The Ultimate Fighter, but pales in comparison to Aldo's. And while you could argue Florian has the slightest of advantages against Aldo on the ground, you could make an argument that Aldo is the one with superior grappling. The only way I can see Florian winning this fight, is if he uses his striking to mix in take downs and control Aldo from the top. Easier said then done, but I don't see how Kenny could win this fight on the feet. Although this fight should be closer then most expect, I'm giving the edge to Aldo.

Frankie Edgar(c) vs. Gray Maynard

Lightweight Championship

These two lightweights put on a barn burner of a fight earlier this year. Gray Maynard (10-0-1-1) dominated the champ Frankie Edgar (13-1-1) in the opening frame, almost finishing the fight on multiple occasions. Edgar showed the heart of a champion though, battling back to force a draw. They will look to settle their differences once and for all this Saturday.

Gray Maynard is the only person to pin a loss on Frankie Edgar, having beaten him by unanimous decision earlier in their careers. He then won 5 more fights, finally earning the right to challenge for the lightweight belt. His stand up, though a little wild, has proven effective. His wrestling has always been his strong point, a tool he used to defeat Edgar the first time they met. Frankie was able to defend the take down in their last bout, so it'll be interesting to see what his game plan is.

Frankie Edgar might be the Rodney Dangerfield of MMA. Guy gets no respect. He's never in the discussion of Pound for Pound best, he's said to be undersized at lightweight, criticized for not finishing fights and only being a "point fighter". This is the same guy who beat B.J. Penn twice. TWICE! The only other fighter who can say that? George St. Pierre. He showed the heart of a champion in the title fight against Maynard, coming back from an ass beating in the first round to almost steal the fight.

After re-watching their last fight, I noticed a few things that I hadn't before. Right before Edgar got clipped in the first round, he had been dropping his right hand every time he jabbed with his left. Maynard saw that, and almost ended the fight. The improvement of Edgar's take down defense from his first fight with Maynard also surprised me. Not only was he able to stay off his back, but he took Maynard down several times, something I suspect caught the challenger off guard.

Their first fight was an instant classic, and I expect nothing less in their third bout. It'll be close, but after re watching their first fight I can't help but arrive at the same idea: If Frankie doesn't get clipped in the first, he wins that fight. I don't think he will this time. Getting better and better after every fight is how he has gotten to this point, and I expect Edgar to learn from the previous fight and get the win. Using his superior striking and mixing in the take downs, he should take the unanimous decision.

After going 7-2 in picks the last two weeks, I think it's safe to say I've got this MMA thing down pat. I say that with the hopes of jinxing myself, secretly hoping that Brian Stann and Kenny Florian get the upset victories. No matter who wins or loses, it should be a great night of fights. Preview: UFC on Versus 6:Cruz vs. Johnson

First off, what a crazy UFC 135 card. The “future star of MMA” cemented his status as the present star of the sport, and we saw two legendary fighters go out on their shield. While I believe we’ll see Takanori Gomi again, I don’t expect Matt Hughes in the octagon again. For the sake of his health, I hope I’m right. Meanwhile the Light-Heavyweight Champion, Jon “Bones” Jones, retained his title with a dominating performance against Quinton “Rampage” Jackson. Next up for the champ is former friend and training partner “Sugar” Rashad Evans, a fight that should go down early spring.

Now let’s look ahead to this weekend, and the rare gem that is a free title fight…

Mac Danzig vs. Matt Wiman

This is a redo fight for these two Lightweight fighters. They fought previously at UFC 115, with Wiman “winning” by guillotine choke in the first round. Despite the fact that Danzig never tapped out or lost consciousness, referee Yves Lavigne called the fight and awarded Wiman the submission victory. A rematch was scheduled for UFC Fight Night 22 last year, but a chest injury forced Danzig to pull out.
“Handsome” Matt Wiman (13-6) has been in the UFC for a while now. In his last fight he lost a razor thin decision to top 10 fighter Dennis Siver, which snapped a three fight win streak. The season 5 The Ultimate Fighter contestant is looking to regain some momentum in the always stacked Lightweight Division. More than competent on theground or standing, he’ll look to use those all around skills against Danzig.
Mac “I don’t Need a Nickname Thank You Very Much” Danzig (20-8) is coming off a Knockout of the Night performance against former Lightweight contender Joe Stevenson. If you haven’t seen that fight yet go watch it, the look on Danzig’s face after he puts Stevenson to sleep is priceless. The only person more surprised than Stevenson that Danzig KOedStevenson, was Danzig. Did that make sense? Moving on, Danzig is looking for more than revenge against Wiman for the bullshitish loss last year. Like his UFC onVersus opponent, he would love some consistency in the deepest division in the UFC.
Danzig is a submission “specialist”. Notice the quotation marks around specialist? While Danzig has gotten most of his career wins via submission, I’m not so sure he’s better on the mat then Wiman. Sure Yves “Is there a fight going on? Wasn’t paying attention my bad”Lavigne might have called the fight early, but was Danzig getting out of that choke in the first fight? Maybe, maybe not. But Wiman has an advantage on the feet, so I expect him to keep it standing and KO Danzig late in the fight. I’ll take…

Charlie Brenneman vs. Anthony “Rumble” Johnson

Charlie Brenneman (14-2) is coming off the biggest win of his career, an upset decision victory over top contender Rick Story. Using his smothering ground game, the veteran wrestler has won nine out of last 10 fights. He’ll look to continue that momentum and move toward the front of the welterweight division.
Anthony “Rumble” Johnson (9-3) returned to action earlier this year after an 18 month layoff and earned a decision victory over than top 10 fighter Dan Hardy. The former NJCAA wrestling champion will try and keep this fight standing and add Brenneman to his list of KO victims. The bigger challenge for Rumble might be the day before the fight, during the weigh in. The 6”2’ fighter has a massive frame and has missed weight twice in his UFC career.
Rumble is going to want to keep this fight standing. He’s been controlled on the ground before, and I’m not sure Brenneman wouldn’t be able to do the same thing to him. I fully believe that Johnson can KO Brenneman if it stays standing for too long. I also fully believe Brenneman won’t keep it standing for too long. Expect Brenneman to take Rumble down as soon as he’s able, and use his smothering ground game to control Rumble for the length of the fight. In other words, I expect Anthony Johnson to get Jon Fitched for 15 minutes.

Pat Barry vs. StefanStruve

Pat Barry (6-3) is 5”11. Stefan Struve (21-5) is 6”11. Let that sink infor a second. Look at that picture. This is going to be like Master fighting Blaster. And if you don’t know who Master Blaster are, go to hell (damn kids). Getting back on topic,these two heavyweights are looking to bounce back after devastating KOs. Seriously devastating. Like, waking up on your back, looking up at the lights, asking the ring doctor what happened devastating. Neither one of these fighters like going the distance, so this should be a good scrap. Not to mention hilarious, two guys with a 12 inch height difference slugging it out.
Stefan Struve, the 23 year old Dutch wunderkind, is tall. How tall? When pressed up against the octagon, his eyes are above the fence. When he walks around outside, birds try and build a nest on top of his head. He has to have a blinking light on his forehead at night so plans don’t fly into him. He’s tall is what I’m trying to say. Despite his age, he’s racked up an impressive 5-3 record in the UFC. His losses are to current #1 contender Junior Dos Santos, perennial contender Roy Nelson, and fast rising prospect Travis Browne. The guy has a reach advantage over almost anybody, an da very efficient ground game. He’s only going to improve as he gains more experience in the UFC.
Pat Barry is…well he’s Pat Barry. The always goofy, never at a loss for words, fan favorite. Who got knocked the hell OUT against Cheick Kong in his last fight. In his defense he was dominating that fight and looked to have Kongo finished at one point, before getting nailed with an all or nothing Hail Mary upper cut right on the button. The accomplished kickboxer with a suspect ground game has alternated wins and losses in his UFC career, but has delivered an entertaining fight every time out. This one should be no different.
Stefan Struve has 14 career submission wins and his only UFC losses have come by TKO/KO. Pat Barry, an accomplished kickboxer, has 5 wins by KO/TKO and two of his three losses in the UFC have come by submission. So logic dictates Struve would try and takedown Barry and get the submission victory. Right? Right. Expect Struve to use his 10 ½ inch reach advantage to keep Barry on the outside, then get the fight to the ground and earn the tap out victory.

Dominick Cruz (c) vs. Demetrious Johnson

Bantamweight Championship Title

First of all, does anybody know what the hell a bantam is? I mean flyweight, featherweight, middleweight, those make sense. But have you ever heard anybody use the word bantam in a none fighting sense? I need an intern to do research like that. And to get me a beer.

Ok, back on topic.I love the lighter weight classes. No you don’t get as many jaw jarring knockouts, but the little guys tend to be more athletic and better conditioned.So the end result is nonstop action and excitement. Think I’m lying? Google Faber/Cruz II and Torres/Mizugaki. You’re welcome. And if the thought of an exciting fight doesn’t get you jacked up, let’s throw a title in the mix. Atitle fight, for free. Trust me when I say, that’s rare for the UFC. How rare?The last free UFC title fight we got was Dan Henderson vs. Rampage Jackson for the Light-Heavyweight Title, way back in 2007 on UFC 75 (also, a bantam is apparently a small poultry or chicken. Fuck an intern, don’t need one).
Dominick Cruz(18-1) is coming off a close decision victory against Urijah Faber, avenging anearlier loss against him for the Featherweight Title. As a matter of fact, theloss against Faber is the only one of his career. Since then he has beendominating the division and I consider him one of the best pound for poundfighters in the world, right up there with George St. Pierre and AndersonSilva. His boxing and muay tai has presented a tough challenge for his opponents, and his take down defense allows the fight to stay on the feet.
Demetrious “MightyMouse” Johnson (10-1) is small for the Bantamweight division. He’s a futurestar when the UFC implements the 125 lb Flyweight Division. In the meantime, he’sgot an opportunity to become the second UFC Bantamweight Champion. Using histop shelf ground game he’s been able to rack up 4 straight victories, includingformer champion Miguel Torres and Japanesestar Norifumi “Kid” Yamamoto in his previous two fights. In his previous fightagainst Torres, he was able to utilize his top game while countering Miguel’snumerous submission attempts. Whether he’ll be able to use his speed (they don’tcall him Mighty Mouse for nothing) and top game in this fight, depends on himgetting Cruz onto his back.
And I don’tbelieve he’ll be able to. Cruz’s stand up has been a hard nut for hischallengers to crack, and I’m not sure Johnson can do it. If he can get thisfight to the ground it’ll be another story, but I don’t think he’ll be able to catchCruz. Matter of fact, the only part of Cruz I expect Demetrious to come incontact with, is his fist. This fight will look similar to Cruz’s second titledefense against Scott Jorgenson: lots of failed take down attempts by thechallenger and constant movement by the champ. And Demetrious getting punchedin the face. A lot.

Four Downs - Week 3: Upsets A-Plenty!

Last week I spoke about Surprises and it seems this week it's all about Upsets. Upsets come in many different forms but it always has the common factor of someone who we didn't think would win actually winning. There were at least three games this week that featured that. Then again, on any given Sunday any team is capable of getting win and it was proved once again.

First Down - One of the biggest upsets this week was the Bills edging out the Patriots 34-31. Even with Tom Brady slinging the ball 45 times it just wasn't enough. The real problem seems to be the Patriots D can't stop anyone out there on the field but you can't blame them completely since Brady did turn the ball over 4 times (he had 4 INT's all of last year alone). So with that, we have the Bills atop the AFC East. Who saw that at the beginning of the year?

The Jets rolled into Oakland and it looked like they were gonna close them out like before (the infamous Sanchez hot dog game) but that wasn't the case. The Raiders came out to play and with NFL leading rusher Darren McFadden, he rolled a fatty on the Jets D as he carved them up for 171 yards and 2 TD's. The Jets were really airing the ball out (Sanchez 369 yards) but just couldn't get those final yards there at the end at the goal line. Oakland isn't looking like the league doormat anymore and if Run DMC can stay healthy and limit turnovers then we could see them make a legitimate push to the playoffs.

The Atlanta Falcons were looking like preseason favorites to make it to the Super Bowl but they haven't look too good out there. Ryan was hit hard out there and thanks to some drops from Roddy White (who complained about his lack of touches the prior to this game) the Buccaneers ended up edging out the Falcons 16-13. The Falcons will need to turn it around fast before they find themselves on a downward slide.

Second Down - The Ravens came out again with their off and on mindset as they seem to be alternating big performances with questionable ones. Against the cupcake Rams they put 37 points on them thanks to big performances from Joe Flacco (389 yards and 3 TDs) and rookie wide receiver Torrey Smith (152 yards, 3 TDs). The Ravens will get the Jets in week 4 so we'll see what kind of team decides to show up to this potential defensive battle.

Casual Dolphin fans were looking at the first win of the season but a late comeback by Colt McCoy (210 yards, 2 TDs) and the Browns put that win on hold. If this keeps up we just may see the Dolphins just tank it and try their luck with Andrew Luck (bad joke I know blah) because Chad Henne is just not the answer.

Third Down - Once again we have another week and another season ending injury. This time it Kenny Britt on a simple run after catch, planting his right leg awkward and automatically going down with what was later diagnosed as an ACL tear. Mike Vick also took a hard hit and hurt his non-throwing hand. At first it was believed to be a broken hand but it was only a deep contusion and he looks good to go in week 4. Vick has only completed 1 game so far and if this trend continues he may miss some serious time due to injury

Two more notable injuries was the one to Kerry Collins and Frank Gore. With Collins, he took a hard shot and it lead to the unceremonious start of the Curtis Painter era. Like the last time he played in a regular season game (vs. Jets '09), it didn't go so well but he did make some decent throws. With Collins out for next week and enough reps, he should do much better because if he goes down it'll be Dan Orlovsky manning (no pun intended) the helm for the Colts.

Frank Gore hurt his ankle (no surprise there) against the Bengals. His replacement, Kendall Hunter, scored the only TD in the game as the Niners were able to squeak one out by winning 13-8. Gore hasn't looked to good out there and with the injury it looks like he'll be entering a time-share with Hunter who seems the better of the two as of now.

Fourth Down - Here are my fantasy pickups for Week 4. Hope you were able to work your wire and get these guys:

QB - Chad Henne - If you're in a deeper league or a 2 QB league then I suppose you can roll with him. At least you know he'll throw it and he does have Brandon Marshall as a target.

Blaine Gabbert - Yes I know he played one game but it was basically a tropical storm in that first quarter so you should give him a chance in better weather this time out. I wouldn't start him and deep leaguers can take a flier as a bye week fill in. Only if you are desperate.

RB - Kendall Hunter - The Gore injury is still a bit cloudy but he will probably get more carries to take the load off of Gore. If Hunter continues to trend upward and Gore down then we could see a changing of the backs in San Fran.

Alfonso Smith - Did good in a fill in role for the injured Beanie Wells. With Wells' history and again limited in practice he could start again against the Giants who have been known to give up some yardage on the ground to backs.

WR - Torrey Smith - He broke out in a big way with his first 3 catches going for TD's and will be one of the more popular picks this week. He will have a tough matchup against the Jets and may end up on Revis Island.

Damian Williams - I know a lot of people are going to be jumping on Nate Washington now that Britt is out for the season but realize Nate is the new Britt for them and Williams will move up to number two. He's a sleeper candidate and if Washington is getting attention it could free up Williams for some plays.

Well there you have it, another week of Four Downs in the book and as we get ready for week 5, it should be full of thrills, spills and those damn Bills!

After a successful week of predictions (Yes Motherfuckers, Praise me for that Bills & Raiders game), I'm back to give you guys a other week of free tarot readings. Before that, Let me get some free hits in like Floyd Mayweather..... Now that's a cheap shot Vicky Ortiz, I mean Victor Ortiz.

1. I know it wasn't much of a prediction but I was also right with Brady & Rivers throwing over 700yds in their match-up.

One has benefited from a huge injury and the other has benefited from being on the bottom more times than Asa Akira. Both of these teams are running a high powered offense, lead by Superstar WR's, Good QB's (1 has the potential to be top 5), a dominate defensive linemen, and among other things. After beating the Saints & Vikings, the Texans & Lions will be 3-0.

A Norv Turner Classic:

Chargers are facing a Chiefs team that lost their best offensive & defensive players (Jamal Charles & Eric Berry) in consecutive weeks. Chargers have a better offensive, defensive, and head coach (Not by much). They're playing at home and should be fired up after letting the Patriots slip away with a win. But didn't the Chargers have the # 1 O & D last year but failed to make the playoffs? Yes. That's because Norv loves losing games like these and it's gonna happen again this week. Matt Cassell gonna throw for 300+yds 3 TD's with big help from Dexter McCluster and Oh yea, a late game Rivers INT will also help the cause. 27- 21 Chiefs

Maybe I'm High:

Thanks to WR Jerome Simpson I got this Bengals/49ers match-up as my game of the week. Not counting Cam Newton, Bengals Andy Dalton has been the most surprising and impressive rookie in this early season. Dalton has a 105.7 QB rating (Worthless stat), 66% comp rate, 3TD's and 0 INT in 6 quarters of play (He got hurt in week 1). Dalton is developing great chemistry with their # 1 WR & Rookie A.J Green (11rec 16yds 2TD), Which is promising for the Bengals FUTURE. After Simpson pot situation, we're all reminded this is Mike Brown's Bengals.

49ers still suck and Frank Gore hasn't been himself so far this year (2.5 avg with 42att), Alex Smith has a impressive 70% comp rate but their mostly dump passes (Can't blame him, He been sack 6x). But this team has weapons in Edwards, Davis, Crabtree, Gore, and Ginn (Special Teams).

I'm thinking out of all this ugliness, beauty will shine. 21-19 Bengals

UFC 135: Jones vs. Rampage Preview

This Saturday begins a three week marathon of UFC events.Included in this run are four title fights, a number one contenders fight, anda plethora of top ten fighters trying to move up the ladder. This Saturdaynight features the Crown Jewel of the UFC, the Light Heavy Weight Championship,an MMA legend perhaps his last appearance in the octagon, a couple PRIDElegends trying to stay off the UFC chopping block, and a battle between two upand coming heavyweight contenders. So take the phone off the hook, put yourbeer on ice, and let’s break down the main card for UFC 135.

Mark Hunt vs. Ben Rothwell

This is a great fight to startoff the card, two MMA veterans who love to put on a show. Ben Rothwell (31-7)has lost two fights in the last 7 years, to current UFC Heavyweight KingpinCain Velazquez and MMA legend Andre Arlovski. Only 3 of his 31 wins have goneto a decision, the majority coming by way of KO/TKO. He does have an underratedground game though, finishing 10 opponents by submission. After tearing his ACLin the first round of his last fight against Gilbert Yvel, he rode that groundgame to a unanimous decision victory. He has been away from the cage for over ayear rehabbing the knee injury, so it’ll be interesting to see if he’sdeveloped a bit of rust during his hiatus.

If you don’t know who Mark Hunt(6-7) is, just stop reading and turn in your MMA fan card. WAIT! I was kidding,I’ll fill you in. The New Zealander made a name for himself in kickboxing,winning the 2001 K1 Gran Prix and compiling a 30-13 record. His MMA career hasbeen less than stellar, but he does hold notable victories over fellow PRIDElegends Wanderlei Silva and Mirco Cro Cop. The ground game has been his biggestweakness; six of his seven losses have come by submission, including his UFCdebut against Sean McCorkel. He was able to showcase his striking in his lastfight, knocking out Chris Tuchscherer inthe first round. The win earned him the Knockout of the Night award, and gavehim another chance to fight in the UFC. A loss could mean his release from theorganization.

This fight comes down to onething in my mind, does Ben Rothwell want to slug it out with the kickboxinglegend, or will he take it to the ground. Rothwell could very well take Huntdown and ride out to a decision victory if he can’t secure a submission. But aless then exciting performance won’t gain him any points with the UFC brass, sohe might want to keep this one standing for a bit. This is exactly what MarkHunt wants. Hunts only chance to win this fight is to keep it standing, wherehe holds a sizeable advantage. A standup fight is what the fans want, Mark Huntwants, and the UFC wants. I think we’ll get some of that, but Rothwell will usehis striking to set up the takedowns, before securing a submission victory.

Nate Diaz vs. Takanori Gomi

The next bout on the main cardfeatures two fighters trying to stay relevant in the Lightweight Division. NateDiaz (13-7), the Ultimate Fighter 5 winner, makes his return to the 155 lbdivision after a 2-2 run at Welterweight. After starting his UFC career with 5straight victories, he’s gone 3-5, losing two straight. The submissionspecialist was rag dolled in his last fight against up and coming welterweightRory Macdonald, before that losing to the always tough Dong Hyun Kim. Nine ofhis 13 wins have come by way of submission, so if the Cesar Gracie trainedbrown belt can get this fight to the ground he has a distinct advantage. Iwould also be remised if I didn’t mention his older brother Nick did submit Gomiback in 2007 in a classic back and forth affair, although it was lateroverturned to a no-contest after Diaz failed a post fight drug test.

Takanori Gomi (32-7) is a legendin the sport, one of the greatest Lightweight fighters in mixed martial artshistory. The former PRIDE Lightweight and Shooto World Welterweight Champion hasfought some of the best, and made a name for himself with his striking andwrestling. The latter half of his career hasn’t been as kind to The FireballKid. Since the previously mentioned fight with Nick Diaz, he’s gone 4-3, andlost 2 out of 3 since joining the UFC. Sandwiched in between two submissionlosses to perennial contenders Clay Guida and Kenny Florian, he was awardedKnockout of the Night for his first round KO of Tyson Griffin. Clearly he still has dynamite in his fists,but will it be enough against a fighter that has a six inch reach advantage?

I don’t think so. As much as Ilove seeing the old school PRIDE fighters win, I don’t think it happenstonight. If Diaz can work his reach and unorthodox boxing to keep Gomi at adistance, I think he takes his by unanimous decision. If he can get it to theground Diaz could submit Gomi, but I don’t think he has the takedowns to get itto the mat. Nate needs this win more to avoid getting the axe by the UFC, Ithink he takes this.

Rob Broughton vs. Travis Browne

WARNING:DO NOT USE THIS FIGHT FOR A BATHROOM OR SMOKE BREAK! On a card filled with MMAlegends, title fights, and division contenders I can see how you would dismissRob Broughton and Travis Browne. Do not make that mistake; this bout has themakings to be Fight of the Night.

RobBroughton (15-5) is riding a five fight win streak into this one. In his last fight, his UFC debut, he won bysubmission against Vinicius Queiroz in the third round. The Britishfighter has a distinct advantage over Travis Browne on the ground, and will tryto get it to the mat. He does have seven KOs to his credit, so he’s comfortableon his feet as well.

Travis Browne (11-0-1) has C4 inhis fists. How they allow him to take those things onto an airplane I’ll neverknow. Undefeated in his young career, he’s 2-0-1 in the UFC. He won Knockout ofthe Night in his last fight, crumpling the 6’11 Stephan Struve with a supermanpunch in the first round. Nine of his 11 wins have ended by KO/TKO. See what Imean about C4 in his hands?

This fight is fairly straightforward: Broughton wants to get it to the ground; Browne wants to keep itstanding. Whoever gets their way will win this fight. Simple enough, right?Look for Browne to strike early and often and put Broughton to sleep. Don’tblink in this one.

Matt Hughes vs. Josh Koscheck

Josh Koscheck (15-5) is a late replacementfor Diego Sanchez, who had to pull out due to a hand injury. Kos hasn’t foughtin almost a year, due to an absolute drubbing at the hands of Welterweightchamp George St. Pierre last December. In a fight where he was thoroughlyoutclassed in the stand up department, he’s spent the last 10 months on theshelf thanks to GSP breaking his orbital bone in the first round of theirchampionship clash. He was a powerhouse wrestler in his collegiate days, andthose skills have served him well in the octagon. He has been putting more of an emphasis on hisstriking though, adding four KOs to his record.

Matt Hughes (45-8) is coming offa 21 second KO loss against B.J. Penn, having won three in a row before that.Once the undisputed Welterweight kingpin, he ruled the division for yearsbefore Mr. St. Pierre came along. Now clearly in the twilight of his career, he’dlove to ride into the sunset with a win over a top 10 opponent. Using his relentless takedown and ground andpound style, he’s amassed 35 stoppage victories with a mixture of submissionsand TKOs. Although he doesn’t formally hold any belt ranking, his Jiu Jitsu istop notch and he may need it if Koscheck wants to take this fight to theground.

Hughes’ stand up has always beensuspect, an area Koscheck has improved mightily since his early TUF days. Hisbest bet to win this fight would be to take Kos down, but will he be able tobully the former Division 1 wrestling champion to the ground. I don’t see ithappening. I see Kos being able to dictate where this fight goes, keeping itstanding for the duration of the bout. Kos does possess knockout power, andcould end this fight early. I think he’ll use his effective standup early on toset up his takedowns and get the victory. Koscheck rides out to a unanimousdecision, while the UFC Hall of Famer Matt Hughes rides into the sunset of abrilliant career.

Jon "Bones" Jones (c) vs. Quinton "Rampage" Jackson:
Light-Heavyweight Championship

And now we come to our featurebout of the evening. Jon “Bones” Jones (13-1) has been an absolute wreckingmachine since making his UFC debut. At only 24 years old he has dominatedveterans Stephan Bonnar, Brandon Vera, and Vladimir Matyushenko to name a few,before dismantling Mauricio “Shogun” Rua for the Light-Heavyweight title. His unorthodoxstriking and superior wrestling skills, mixed with his freakish size and 84.5inch reach has been a tough riddle for fighters to figure out. He has runthrough opponents so thoroughly, many people are calling him not only thefuture of the division, but the sport of MMA. The only question some peoplehave about him is his chin. So far nobody has been able to touch it, so peopleare questioning whether or not he can take a shot. His opponent would certainlyprovide an answer to that question.

Quinton “Rampage” Jackson (32-8)is a tough first title defense for the young champion. Having made a name forhimself in Japan with his powerful striking and above average wrestling, theJapanese fans fell in love with him for his outgoing personality. After joiningthe UFC, he defeated won the Light-Heavyweight Title in only his second boutwith the organization, knocking out Chuck Liddell in the first round. He wouldthen go on to defend it against fellow PRIDE veteran Dan Henderson, beforelosing it to Forrest Griffin in a close decision. Since then he’s stared in asummer blockbuster (The A-Team),gotten arrested (felony reckless driving, among other charges), and gone 4-1 in the octagon to earn a chance to regain histitle. Although his motivation to fight has been questioned before, he seemsintent on getting “his” belt back. And a motivated Rampage is a dangerousRampage. If he can lay glove to Bone’s chin, we could have a new champion.

Jones is the heavy favoritegoing into this fight, going off at 5-1 odds on some betting sites. Whether a24 year old fighter making his first title defense against a former champion ofJackson’s caliber should be such a heavy favorite is debatable. What isn’tdebatable is Jackson’s ability to end the fight if he can get inside Jones’shuge reach advantage. Another questionsurrounding this fight is if Rampage can keep this fight standing where he hasa better chance to win. Jones has done a superb job of mixing up his strikingand takedowns, and if he can do that effectively against Jackson he should beable to retain his title. Although rampage does have a few submission victoriesearly in his career, he does not want to be on his back against Jones. I seeJones utilizing a superior game plan against Jackson, dominating the formerchamp with a mixture of kicks and strikes, before using his takedowns to groundand pound Rampage to a stoppage victory in the later rounds.

Four Downs - Week 2 Edition

Everyone Loves a Surprise

I should say everyone loves a good surprise as opposed to just a surprise in general. Finding out your milk is 5 days spoiled or catching your roommate using bed as a shaving station are not good surprises. Finding a $20 in a pair of jeans you were going to throw out or that girl that wears the tight shirts getting caught in the rain just before class. In football, a surprise can be Cam Newton not struggling as much as what some experts had expected. Another surprise could be the Ravens stifling the Steelers in Week 1 and then unable to stop the madly exciting Matt Hasselbeck and the Titans. Every week in football there are surprises in many different ways and it makes it so much fun to watch.

First Down - "Hey we're 2-0 can you believe it!? Uh no"

I don't know how many people expected the Raiders and Bills to get into a wild shootout, putting 73 combined points. Raiders pretty much had this one in the bag but forgot you have to play till the end and got sloppy allowing the Bills to come back from 18 down. I don't really think the Bills are for real but it makes a nice little story. If they were in the AFC West or NFC South then I could see them sneaking in with a wildcard or division title. Temper your expectations basically.

Is it too early to say Lions football is back? Probably so but you have to like the fact they're actually starting a season and not in the NFL basement. With one of the best young defensive lines in football, the Lions could be this years Buccaneers. To do that, they'll need a healthy Stafford and Jahvid Best to go along with Megatron if they want to reach the playoffs. I know they smashed the Chiefs, who lost Charles early in the game but hey a win is still a win.

I can't believe I'm going to say the Redskins are 2-0. Yes, those Redskins with Rex Grossman as their QB are undefeated. They were close to being 1-1 but those Cardinals, just don't want to win out there anymore. If Grossman can be a serviceable game manager and limit the turnovers and head scratching throws, they could be the surprise team out of the NFC. I would mention the other two 2-0 teams (Packers and Patriots) but we know they're elite and well a lot of people expected them to be at this record already so no surprise there.

Second Down - "Jekyll and Hyde apparently play football too"

We have teams out here now that are showing us the very good and the very ugly. It's leaving us with the question of "Which one is the actual team?". Last week the Ravens and Steelers went head to head and many expected a battle of top defensive teams. What happened was the Ravens stomped all over the Steelers as they won and backed up their trash talk in the offseason. So against the Titans we expected the Titans to rollover to the bullying defense of the Ravens but that didn't happen. Backed by Hasselbeck's 358 yards (Seahawk fans are you reading this?) the Titans beat the Ravens 26-13. CJ2k still looks like he needs more reps as he only gained 53 yards on 24 carries. He would break 53 yards one play alone 2 years ago. Flacco performed average and Ray Rice could only muster 43 rushing yards in what was a disappointing game all around.

Meanwhile, the Steelers of course were dominated by the same Ravens and now were getting a match against the tasty cupcake Seahawks. So of course the Steelers leave them with nothing but a donut (did you expect nothing less?). Hopefully this won't be the start of a trend where the Steelers struggle against the top teams and beat up on the lower level talent. When you're putting up 421 yards of offense to only 164, clearly something is working but they'll need to do that on a consistent basis.

Third Down - "They are who we thought they were…or not?"

If you saw the Redskins, Lions, 49ers, Bengals, Texans and Raiders in first place then congrats you deserve a pat on the back (preferably with an aluminum bat attached to it because you're lying). Giants, Steelers and Colts are at the bottom of their divisions in what's making out to be an interesting start to the season. Obviously all these teams can go up or down in the standings. Most of them will return to their respective places and we might even see a one year wonder that'll make the playoffs. I can only expect more changes as we move on into Week 3.

Fourth Down - "Once he's down, he's staying down and it doesn't look good Jim"

Fantasy owners were definitely replacing their TV's and laptops this week as some key players went down due to injury or underperformed. Chris Johnson once again failed to get going as he only amassed 53 yards. Owners of Jamaal Charles collectively groaned when the back landed awkwardly during the first quarter against the Bills. Later we found out it was a torn ACL and his season is now done. This was a top 5 pick in drafts and going as high as 2 or 3. Those looking for a replacement will have to look to Thomas Jones who did run for almost 900 yards last year. Also in the mix is Dexter McCluster who at 5'8 is not an every down back but they do put him all over the field so he could have some value (Especially in PPR leagues). More QB woes continue as Mike Vick went down with a concussion before the 4th quarter in his return to Atlanta. He'll be out Week 3 and his status after that is unknown. I wouldn't take a flier on their third stringer Kafka unless you're in a 2 QB league with 16 teams. But who knows he could be this years Matt Cassel (from when Brady went down), I'm sure I'm reaching with that one.

In terms of pickups these are my Week 3 adds:

QB: Matt Hasselbeck - Is going to keep throwing until CJ shows up

Mike Kafka - Deep leaguers might be able to catch lightning in a bottle and he is playing a banged up Giants D.

RB: Thomas Jones - Pretty much the starter now and will get most of the carries.

Dexter McCluster - Moves up to second on depth chart and that means more chances for an explosive play.

WR: Nate Burleson - 12 catches already and seems to be settling in nicely with Stafford. Grabbing a TD would be nice.

Eric Decker - Lloyd is still recovering from a groin injury and Royal will be out for awhile with his. Could be this week's Jerome Simpson.

TE: Fred Davis - Chris Cooley just doesn't look right out there on the field. Go with the hot hand

Scott Chandler - 3 TD's in 2 weeks and a guy that size around the goal line is just asking for a jump ball.

Flyweight Division: Little Guys, Big Fights

The idea of Zuffa having a 125 lb division has been bantered about for some time now. As early as 2009 WEC VP Peter Dropick declared they would institute a Flyweight division. Although that never came to fruition, Dana White has said several times that the UFC would move forward with the idea. In an interview with MMA Weekly back in August, he said they might go forward with it as early as 2012.

That’s great news for those of us who have come to appreciate the smaller weight divisions, such as the Feather and Bantamweight divisions over the last few years. Names like Dominick Cruz, Urijah Faber, and Miguel Torres have become synonymous with exciting, fast paced fights. And while most of us could rattle off a laundry list of other fights in those divisions, name 3 fighters in the Flyweight division. Go ahead and try. I’ll wait.

Not so easy is it? This may come as a surprise to some UFC fans, but there is a world of MMA outside of the Zuffa umbrella. And that is where you’ll find the flyweight division. Shooto, Tachi Palace Fighting, and other smaller organizations around the globe are where these guys reside. Hiding in plain sight, waiting for the call up to the Big Show. Don’t worry; Kevo is here to help bring these guys into the light. Read on to get a 125lb knowledge bomb dropped on you, as I introduce some of the Flyweight Division’s finest:

Ian “Uncle Creepy” McCall

Let’s start out with the cream of the crop, Ian McCall. If that name rings a bell, it's probably because he's a WEC veteran. He had a 1-2 run through the organization in the Bantamweight division, losing his final fight to future division juggernaut Dominic Cruz. At that point, he apparently thought "I bet if I lost 10 lbs, I'd be more successful at this fighting thing." How prophetic that statement was.
After defeating Jeff Willingham via first round submission at something called MEZ Sports - PANDEMONIUM 3, he faced his toughest fight to date: A match with #1 ranked Flyweight Jussier da Silva. With the upset victory, Ian formally introduced himself to the Flyweight division. Since then, he went on to defeat Dustin Ortiz by UD. After defeating Dustin Ortiz, he would go on to win the Tachi Palace Fights Flyweight Championship by defeating Darrell Montague via submission. Expect Uncle Creepy to make in immediate impact in the UFC.

Jussier "Formiga" da Silva

Fighting out of the BJJ factory that is Nova Uniao, Lil JDS was THE top flyweight in the world. Then he ran into the buzzsaw that is Uncle Creepy. But we'll get to that later. Lil JDS started his career fighting in the smaller Brazilian promotions before working his was into Shooto. His first big break came when he fought Shooto Bantamweight Champion and #1 ranked Flyweight Shinichi Kojima in a non-title contest. Formiga upset Kojima, and a rematch for the Shooto BW title was planned. However a knee injury forced BJ to vacate the title, and LJDS hasn't fought in Japan since. Instead the now #1 ranked FW went back to Brazil and successfully defended his South American Shooto against previously undefeated Alexandre Pantoja. He then signed an exclusive four fight deal with Tachi Palace Fights, debuting in December of 2010 against Danny Martinez. After snagging the unanimous decision, he next challenged top 10 fighter Ian McCall. Unfortunately for our hero, he lost the fight and a chance to compete for the TPF Flyweight Title. In his next and most recent fight, he soundly defeated perenial top 10 Flyweight and former Shooto Bantam and Featherweight Champion Mamoru Yamaguchi. Expect the young Brazilian standout to make an immediate impact when/if he lands in the UFC. In the meantime, he has his sights set on a rematch against Uncle Creepy.

Mamoru Yamaguchi

That’s a bomb ass ‘fro isn’t it? Mamoru rocks that bad boy in honor of Japanese boxing legend Yoko Gushiken. A legend in his own right, he’s won the 132 and 123 pound Shooto titles and is currently ranked #4 by Sherdog (whatever that’s worth). The well rounded fighter known for his counter striking is currently the King of the Cage Jr. Flyweight Champion has lost only two fights on the last 3 years (to the at that time Shooto 123 lb champ Shinichi Kojima and #3 ranked Jussier da Silva). Although a bit older then some of the other guys on this list, he’s still one of the most dangerous FW out there.

Yasuhiro Urushitani

The reigning Shooto 123 lb Champion and top 3 ranked FW, Urushitani is currently riding a 4 fight winning streak. Matter of fact, he’s lost 1 fight since 2005, although he does have 4 draws. I’ll be honest, this guy is a decision machine. Of his 19 wins, 14 have gone the distance. Even Jon Fitch thinks that’s ridiculous. He did finish his two last opponent though, so maybe there’s some hope. Regardless, the guy is a tough fight for anyone. Let’s hope he makes his U.S. debut soon.

Darrell “The Mongoose” Montague

Let’s head back stateside and met “The Mongoose”. One of the brightest prospects in all of MMA, not just the FW division, he is the former Tachi Palace Fighting Flyweight Champion. He lost to current #1 ranked Ian McCall, snapping a 6 fight winning streak. An exciting fighter who doesn’t like going the distance, he’s finished 7 of the 9 fights he’s won. At only 23 years old he’s already got a World Title and been in the cage with the best. Expect to hear his name for many years to come.

So there you have it, 5 of the brightest stars in the featherweight division. Do yourself a favor and look these guys up for more information. Try and catch their past and future fights, you won't be disappointed. At worse, you'll be the smartest guy in the room when the UFC introduces the flyweight division.

Madden 12 Game of the week- Chargers vs Patriots: Rivers & Brady battle won't beat the combined 933yds set by Brady & Henne in week 1 but they can easily and will throw over 700yds in this game. Difference between the Chargers & Dolphins, Rivers team actually has weapons and they score TD's. I don't care if the Chargers are rank # 1 in pass defense thanks to Mcnabb's laughable 39yds. Both teams average defenses and this should be a good-old Madden shootout.

Chargers should edit Madden's match-ups and put CB's on the Patriots Gronkowski & Hernandez and let the LB's play pass coverage against the WR's.

Chad Ochocinco had every reason to be in awe, amazed, wet, after watching his new QB Tom Brady in those Ugg's shoes or that performance he had against the Dolphin's "defense" by throwing over 500yds. Honestly, That Patriots offensive line was more impressive than Brady. That pass protection would be awesome in "Whale Wars". 41-35 Patriots.

Ciara Bowl (Beautiful woman until she whips out that 14' Dick *allegedly*. As we they say, This is a trap game) - Jaguars vs Jets: MJD not %100, Jack Del Rio on the hot seat, Luke McCown the starting QB, and a weak defensive line should setup a easy win for my Jets. But my history as a Jets fan. When we're big time favorites in a game, We lose in dramatic fashion.

MJD will be very effective, Luke will make timely throws, and that defensive line will force a fumble. My Jets will have a 4th Q lead but Jags will jump ahead with a play that should went 12yds at most but goes 30+ for a TD. But ever since Sexy Rexy & Mark Sanchez has been on board, these types of mishaps have been less frequent and because I believe Sanchez has that Big Ben clutch gene in him and my Jets will once again prevail (See, I told you I was biased). 20-17 Jets

Eye Candy of Week 2: Raiders vs Bills- Why you ask? Just do me a favor and look past the recent failures of both teams (Ok, I know it's a lot longer than recent). Look past the fact, these Bills lack talent. Look past the fact, these Raiders get flag down more times than Las Vegas Hookers during clearance week. Chan Gailey & Hue Jackson have done a tremendous job with their offenses. Forget what Ryan Fitzpatrick did against the Chiefs, Last season he threw 4 TD's against the Ravens & Bengals. Besides Stevie Johnson, Ryan doesn't have playmakers. Up to last week, I bet Pathers Steve Smith would have loved some Fitzpatrick on his team. But somehow Ryan threw 23 TD's in 13 games and this season him & Stevie Johnson are off to a fast. I'm not really surprised and you shouldn't be either because Chan Gailey has always improved teams offenses but I wanna see if they made the decision by not drafting a QB.

Hue Jackson play-calling ability & the health of Darren McFadden has enabled him to become "Run DMC" and soon people will realize what I'm starting to believe, and that's Run DMC is the NFL's 3rd best RB (1. AP 2.CJ). Is Hue Jackson a great head coach? That remains to be seen. But the Raiders speed and dumbness make them fun & frustrating to watch at same the time. Fuck their FB Reece look like a TE against the Broncos.

Can the Raiders win outside their division? (They went 2-8 out their division last season), Are we not giving the Bills offense enough credit against the Chiefs? I don't fucking know to questions but I'm gonna say yes & yes. I love the Raiders speed (If you haven't noticed) and I'm intrigue by the possibility of new tandem of F&J (Fitzpatrick & Johnson). Why over Chargers vs Patriots or Eagles vs Falcons for my Eye Candy of the week? Because we all love comeback stories. Even if it's only for a week. 28-24 Raiders

Time to vent: Hey Football experts, especially Cris Collinsworth, Can we give Revis credit for shutting down Dez Bryant in week 1? Yes, the motherfucker was killing Cromartie and yes had a nice catch against Revis on the sideline. After that, Revis Island was in full effect and Dez had become a other victim . But no, I gotta Cris's fucking mouth. "Dez can't run", "He on fumes", "Dez is hurt".. Didn't Revis suffer the same injury as Dez in the game? Yes! So stop sucking dick and give this year's defensive player of the year his credit.

Fours Downs with Mark Riley Jr

This is the first installment of my weekly article featuring highlights from each week in the NFL. I will also take a look from a fantasy perspective for those of you that play fantasy football. I will be looking to adding my own personal take on things so I'm always looking forward to hearing your input. Whether you agree, disagree, bash my writing, call out my family or curse my unborn children it's all game on this page. So with that, enjoy and thanks for reading!

First Down - After a long grueling lockout and a blur of a preseason, the NFL finally kicked off it's season for 2010. We had a matchup of the past two champions in the New Orleans Saints against the Green Bay Packers. Packers came out and proved why they were so tough to beat last season as Aaron Rodgers seemed to pick up where he left off by torching the Saints for 312 yds and 3 TD's as they got the W. Beautiful throws to Jordy Nelson and Greg Jennings showed just how elite his accuracy is and when you give Rodgers time, he'll pick your team apart. New Kickoff Rule? What Kickoff Rule? Randall Cobb didn't care if they kick from the 35 yard line as he juked and jived his way into the end zone with an 108 yard TD return. Even though the Saints lost, as long as they have Drew Brees under center, they'll always have a chance to win.

Second Down - There was so much action around the league Sunday it's hard to go over all of it so I'll pick out some things I noticed. That Bills offense is either really good or the Chiefs D was pretty bad. I think it's somewhere along the middle and I can't see Ryan "Can You Make It" Fitzpatrick throw for 4 TD's every game. We'll need to see more from him to see if the Bills will be more than a doorstep you wipe your feet on into the house. Also, I want to see how many times Stevie Johnson blames God for his drops on the field. Why is he called Stevie now? I see some places it's Stevie and others it's Steve. Only one famous Stevie in my life and that's Stevie Wonder so cut it out.

If you want to know what life without Peyton Manning on the field you got a good look at it and it was not pretty at all. Getting spanked by the Houston Texans 34-7 is never a good feeling. Kerry Collins did the best he could on short such short time with the playbook but 2 critical fumbles leading to TD will doom you every time. On the positive, he did hook up with Wayne for a nice TD as he led the team in targets with 11. If Manning ends up missing half or even worse the whole season it's going to be a long season for Colts fans they may end up rebuilding sooner rather than later if they end up with the top pick (Andrew Luck anyone?). Meanwhile, the Texans D looked good out there as they switched to a new scheme and move All-Pro DE Mario Williams to LB now. Remember when there was so much heat over who they'd take between Williams, Bush and Young? Boy did that ever work out beautifully for them. With the Colts Manning-less, Jacksonville installing the "great" Luke McCown at QB and the Titans with Matt Hasselbeck this could be the year the Texans take the division if their stars stay healthy on offense.

With as much hype around their D, who saw the pounding the Steelers took from the Ravens coming? All the trash talk before they even got on the field made it seem like it was going to be a slugfest but it turned into a purple and black teabag session. Ed Reed looked his old ball hawking self with 2 picks and Ray Rice was making the Steelers look like a weekend flag football team. Big Ben must have forgot the games matter in the regular season because when you throw 3 picks it's obvious the mental preparation isn't' there.

Speaking of lack of preparation, the Dolphins just looked lost out there as Tom Brady manhandled them by himself out there. Tack on the human slot machine Wes Welker and Miami never stood a chance. Brady shows why he's the best player in the league right now and it's hard to have anyone come close to him. I will say Reggie Bush did make it through a whole game and not leave on a stretcher or get helped off the field. I'm still trying to figure out if he's actually good or not. I mean the guy has talent and is one of the most explosive punt returners in the league but I can't see him as an every down back. I think if you can get 15-20 carries from him and get him out on the flats, that's Reggie at his best. If he can play even 12 games I'll be happy for him and maybe we can see what he can actually do out there when healthy. Lastly, someone please get the Dolphins a QB. Chad Henne as a QB is horrible. I'd rather get an oil massage from William Hung than watch a Dolphins game with him under center. I feel for Brandon Marshall and one can only home the "fans" of Miami will care enough to call for some turnover but what can you expect where pretty much anybody can be minority owner of the team. Nothing says I'm serious about football like having the Williams sisters staking ownership in your team.

Third Down - As much as I hated seeing the Giants lose, my hate for the Jets is even greater. I will take on any Jet fan and they will crumble because most are bandwagon fans and at the sight of possible failure they will latch on to the next best team because "they're a winner and I'm a winner so it just makes sense". No! You're an even bigger loser for such a way of thinking and should commit Seppuku for tarnishing the game of football. Anyways, that's a rant for another day. I put the hate aside for Week 1 because the games fell on 9/11 and everyone knows what happened that tragic day 10 years ago. The opening ceremony was moving and touching. I wish I could suit up and play out there but watching the game and seeing how the Jets were able to come back and kick the FG, I couldn't be happier as the Jets were "America's Team" that night. It was a win for Jets and a win for New York as the greatest city in the world will continue on another day.

Fourth Down - Time for the fantasy part which is my favorite part. Owners of CJ2K, Chris Johnson, were happy to see him sign that contract and finally get him in uniform but were disappointed with his production on the field (9 rushes for 24 yds) but that's to be expected since he missed all of training camp and preseason due to his holdout. Be patient, he will unleash his fury on teams in due time so don't expect the world of him for at least 2 or 3 weeks. Arian Foster owners have been bummed out due to the hamstring injury so I hope you guys went out and picked up Ben Tate (24 rushes 116 yds). Maybe you'll be lucky enough to grab him off the wire if he's available (shoot yourself in the foot 3 times if you didn't do it).

Cam Newton hooked up with Steve Smith for 2 TD's and I'm pretty sure a lot of you will run to your wire to pick him up. If you're going to use him as a bye week fill-in then I have no problem but I can't really see you using him as a starter unless you're in a 2 QB league. Remember he is a rookie and is getting used to the pro style as a quarterback. Don't let a couple of TD's cost you some games in the beginning. He will struggle and I will laugh and say horrible things about your choice, ridicule your team and sing a song about how you suck and should be banned from playing football.

Aaron Hernandez also may have won your match with his performance and would be a nice pickup if you have a lesser TE (Pettigrew, Heap, Kendricks, Cooley, Gonzalez) starting for you. I like him better than the Gronk. Beanie Wells looked good in the feature back role (18 carries 90 yds 1 TD), Roll with him until he goes down because you know it will happen. Owners of Steven Jackson were hoping for more after his big TD run but he strained his quad and it was same old story again with him. Carnell took the "Cadillac" out for a drive as he rushed for 91 yards on 19 carries. He makes a good pickup especially if Jackson misses some time. He is still injury prone and take that into consideration as you set your lineups Sunday.

Owners of LeGarrette Blount shouldn't panic with his measly line of 5 carries and 15 yards. He face the DT duo Suh and Fairley along with having to pass since they were down much of the game. A friend of mine was ready to drop him and pick up Sproles. Don't be that guy. Please, please, please don't be that guy. It's only been a week and he's the bonafide starter and isn't hurt so no need to be hasty. If you find yourself in these spots, exit the site immediately, turn off your laptop and go fly a kite or indulge in a tasty treat from Dunkin Donuts or local deli. Clear your head and realize the season is a long grind and there's no need to hit the panic button.

The big question in the minds of every Bronco fan is "Can we win some games this year?"

I am happy to say the answer is an unequivocal and resounding "YES!" As a life long Bronco fan I've witnessed the team in moments of glory. I watched as the Broncos won back to back Super Bowls in '98 and '99. I Have also seen the flip-side of that coin during the the McDaniels regime. The shopping of promising players like Peyton Hillis, for an average Brady Quinn. The Marshall fiascos, the videotaping scandal and then the abysmal 4-12 season of 2010. So, what does 2011 hold in store for the Broncos?

Let's examine what Denver has done since the end of last season, starting with bringing back John Elway. Everyone knows who Elway is and the contributions he's made to the Broncos over the years. Bringing him back as the Broncos Vice President of Football Operations was a genius move by the Denver Front Office. It gave a downtrodden fan base hope in a year where there didn't seem to be much to be hopeful about. A new era seemed to be dawning. If anyone could restore the Broncos to a contending and respectable team then it would be Elway. He doesn't know the meaning of quit. His choice for Head Coach? John Fox.

A defensive specialist, Fox became Carolina's Head Coach in 2002, inheriting a 1-15 team. He fashioned them into a smash mouth football team. Under Fox the Panthers had three 11 win campaigns that led to two NFC South Division Titles (in 2003 and 2008) and three playoff appearances (2003, 2005, 2008). The Panthers went 5-3 in the post season under Fox, including a Super Bowl appearance following the 2003 season, where Carolina lost narrowly to New England.
Elway had this to say about the Broncos new Head Coach, "John has coached great defenses, turned teams around and been to Super Bowls. He is a dynamic and proven leader who will energize our entire organization."

Next came the draft, in which Denver grabbed Von Miller, LB from Texas A&M with their first round pick. Then in round 2 of the draft picked up Rahim Moore, FS from UCLA. Both dramatically upgrading the Broncos defense, that had been dead last in run defense the year before. They also added depth to the offense by drafting Julius Thomas, TE from Portland State, and Virgil Green, TE out of Nevada. They also nabbed Tackle Orlando Franklin from Miami, and that guy is just a monster.

Now factor in a healthy Elvis Dumerville, who missed all of last year with a torn pectoral muscle. Also the training camp emergence of what seems to be a healthy and revitalized Knowshon Moreno. Also the free agents we picked up are lethal in red zone situations. Willis McGahee has shown he can still power the ball in short yardage and goal line situations, and Daniel Fells is an amazing TE from the Rams, who will be used a lot in our offense.

With many returning starters, a dependable, game managing Kyle Orton at the helm, the Broncos could just be set up for a perfect storm of comeback greatness this year. I'm of the opinion, after watching our first team offense and first team defenses excel in the preseason (and they did), that we will be heading to the playoffs this year as AFC West Champions. Our offense looks sharp and our defense is head hunting. Elway and Fox have put together a tough team. This is the year of The Orange Crush 2.0 Defense, Aka The Legion of Doom. GO BRONCOS!!

As a p.s. Tebow looked decent in the preseason. (Now the Floridians won't be bummed because he wasn't mentioned.)

Some things age well-a good movie,some authors,certain memories,

...many things but boxers are generally not among those things.

On May 23rd in Russia during a fight that I imagine only hardcore boxing

fans paid attention to Roy Jones joined that list-getting not just knocked

out but KNOCKED THE FUCK OUT!! by some cruiser weight named

Denis Lebdev.

Once very long ago Roy Jones was a great fighter and if he was too full

of himself,if his braggadocio irked more than it entertained he never seemed

to care.

At the very least Roy Jones always made it clear that for him boxing

was as much about money as it was about legacy.

I was never that big a fan but I can say emphatically that with the exception

of Ali I never saw a fighter able to fight and fight well going backwards-

Roy Jones could and while you always hear the cliché of lightening fast

hands Roy Jones had that to and in spades.

I thought Roy Jones was done in after getting knocked out by Tarver in

July of 07 but back he came and again was knocked out by Glen Johnson

in June of 08.

He was slow that night just as he was spent and over matched by

Tarver a year before.

This Sat past on *BAD* Roy Jones spoke about the loss in Russia trying to

make it much more interesting than it was. He then spoke about knowing

when to get and out and how he was not going to be one of those guys that

didn’t know when to get out-a little too late for that now because he is

one of those guys still trying to milk dwindling reflex for one more memory

of how it used to be for him on nights when he was the best.

On a Sat in Russia against a bum that years ago Roy Jones would not have

bothered to acknowledge he looked slow and old and if he is not careful

he will be the next punch line in a long list of them about old men who

don’t know how to leave.

Sometimes it is not age that catches you but circumstance and fate...

The French Open having just ended put me in a mind to recall Monica

Seles for whom fate was not kind.

Seles was the youngest ever French Open Champion at the age of

sixteen. Between 91 and 92 she was number 1 in the world and her

future seemed bright. She won 9 Grand Slam titles and no one would

could be faulted for believing that she just might be the best woman

tennis player ever.

In 1991 she dethroned Steffi Graff and though she could not know it

then it was the beginning of the end of her professional career.

April 30 1993 in Germany a nine inch knife held by Guenter Parche,

a fan who had far too much invested in Steffi Graff-a woman he

didn’t know other than on a tennis court and who he could not bear

the thought of not being number 1.

Guenter Parche decided for reasons that will never make sense

to plunge that knife in the back of Monica Seles and for that

he received two years probation.

If you saw it live or watched it on You tube it is easy to

understand why modern athletes are wary of and sometimes

don’t care to connect with fans.

If you have seen the video-the pain on Seles face,the way her

body collapses backwards into the arms of a trainer it is hard

to seperate at that moment the real world from the sports world.

Monica Seles would be away from tennis for two years and

because sports-no matter what you may think is first and foremost

a business her peers would vote to strip her of her ranking-

never bothering to look back or feel shame or be embarrassed.

That decision shifted millions in endorsements from Seles to

other players on the tour. Away from the spotlight of tennis

Monica Seles battled depression and found comfort in food.

She would return in 1995 and fight her way back to number

five in the world but it wasn’t the same-she wasn’t the same.

Her weight became an issue and was fodder for the typical

type of cruelty you might expect-the British Press being the

worst.

When she had left the sport at which she was so good she was

the prototype but upon her return she found a new generation-

stronger,faster,and because women in sports are not simply

judged on talent-prettier and thinner.

When she was the best in the world she was the aggressor but

in returning she found herself adrift.

Monica Seles won her last title in 1996 at the Australian...Her

last final was 1998 at the French-fate and symmetry can be a bitch.

Age was not her undoing and by the time she announced her

retirement no one really cared save for the die hard's who always

care.

Monica Seles did not have a choice but Roy Jones does;

here’s hoping that he chooses to stop boxing before

the only ones who care are the ones with a vested interest

in the economics of his next fight.

Time cares little for the aspirations of men and age

cares even less-sooner than later time calls for us all

that is not the problem...It’s how you answer that

So after the first 31 games of the season, the Mets are hanging out in last place in the NL East with a 13-18 record. Notorious for making big moves, the current situation makes me believe a trade is coming, and the Mets will be unloading some big name players.

When all else fails with trying to add big name player after big name player, you only have one option, rebuild. Yes, start all over.

Looking at some of the names on the roster, David Wright and Jose Reyes seem to be the two biggest trade pieces. But what about Carlos Beltrán? Having a no trade clause, it looks very unlikely the Mets will be able to deal him at this point. But with Wright and Reyes both being big names, and productive players while healthy you can figure many teams will want to jump at the chance to add them to their team. Now, if I'm in the Mets shoes I'm drooling over the prospects I can get back.

Wright and Reyes

For example, lets take a look at the Detroit Tigers. Ace Justin Verlander is 2-3 with a 3.75 ERA in seven starts. In all seven starts he's gone six innings, and hasn't gave up more than three runs in a single start this season. Why? Of those seven games the Tigers have failed to score more than three runs five times.

Maybe I'm being a bit bias, as the Tigers are my team, but when you look at the pieces the Tigers have to offer, it starts looking more and more realistic.

Here is the Tigers current situation. Detroit has good hitters, but are still one slugger away from being a playoff threat. GM Dave Dombrowski and owner Mike Ilitch both want to win now, and have shown to make moves leading to a late playoff run. The last two seasons have been highly unsuccessful when trying to add "role players", so why not go after a big name?

David Wright seems like the more logical choice. And when you see what Detroit has to offer, you understand why. Long time Tiger Brandon Inge's game is gone. Seemingly only on the team for one reason these days, his defense. Yet, after a slow start at the plate (.248 average, nine RBI) and a well below .951 fielding percentage, his time in Detroit just might be up.

Now for the pieces Detroit has to offer. You got to figure the Mets will be looking for a future third baseman to replace Wright, the Tigers are the perfect team. Bring in prospects Francisco Martinez and Nick Castellanos. While Martinez is more MLB ready right now, Castellanos has more upside for the future. Both are third basemen and both are in the top 5 of the Tigers top prospects.

So the way I'm thinking is, if I'm the Tigers, I offer Martinez or Castellanos, add in a top prospect and MLB ready left handed pitcher Andy Oliver, along with a guy like Jose Ortega, a right handed pitcher who looks to be a solid bullpen option in the future. All three are top ten team prospects.

Now remember, this is just hypothetical, but it just shows what kind of pieces the Tigers have. As I said above, the Tigers are a team that wants to win now, and with Magglio Ordonez slumping the Tigers need another hitter somewhere in the 3-6 spot. Wright fits in perfectly.

Quickly, as for Reyes, I can't see the Tigers trying to add him. While they'd love to have the speedy infielder, the price would be too high for both. So I figure if they are both traded, they will go to separate teams.

Considering the Mets could get a package of future top prospects, it's not hard to believe Wright and Reyes could be rocking a new uniform sometime this season.

In less than twenty hours the dreams of many will be realized while others will run like cheap dye during a heavy downpour. Only a few will be able to recall with any clarity who was drafted where and by whom and for what. Most will be forgotten in three years time which is the average length of the average N.F.L. career. The lucky ones might last a little longer-finding at the end a taste of what they imagined

their dreams would bring.

In less than twenty hours the hyper ventilating mouth breathers that make up The World Wide Leader's draft coverage will be in full swing and for the next seventy-two hours Todd McShay and Mel Kipper Jr will ascend to the stage resplendent with bluster; filled to overflow with moist speculation and hours to fill where their voices are the center of the football universe. For the next three days Chris Berman's fagged and bromidic shtick will be more or less confined to seconds as opposed to minutes vying with Tom Jackson's old school representing and Chris Carter's need to speak truth to power while he helps enshrine the very league he often disdains. Beginning Thursday the abstract of want will come face to face with the factual reality that is the NF.L. in the bubble palace of Radio City wrapped in reverential adulation.

It is no small feat...no minor thing that the N.F.L. Draft-an event that once was the sole province of the hardest of the hardcore football junkie has become a prime time event and as much as TWWL and the N.F.L. want you to believe... the draft is not about them...in truth it is not about the fans either except as

background-a vocalized exordium to begin the procession that will follow. For the top ten picks and the rest of the first round class it must be a strange thing to be lauded with one hand while the other hand tells you-with no hint of irony-all the ways in which you are flawed or otherwise need improving. It must surely be an insensate thing to be both future and past at the same time knowing that from the moment you are chosen the clock begins to run on how soon you will be replaced or how quickly your failure will be evidenced. The descent from heralded rookie to failed prospect can happen at light speed and for reasons not always clear or sensible and in the case of a few: JaMarcus Russell, Vince Young, Matt Leinart is deserved to one degree or

another.

That said: how awful it must be to be in your mid to late twenties and be considered not simply a failure but a proven failure in the eyes of both the N.F.L. and the public. Today Brady Quinn is considered at best a back-up and at worst a journeyman who will never be a top flight quarterback -judgment rendered from an

eight game sample on a struggling Brown's team helmed by the mangina (Eric Mangini to you) finalized by 2 games with a Bronco team for whom he was an after-thought.

Take a moment to imagine what it must feel like to be dissected and judged by television commentators and draft analysts...to have your possible future decided in mere moments by people who glorify you as they glorify themselves but for whom you are merely the meat in the side show; the trill of the barker's come on.

They will tell the story of your life as b-roll, will gush and fawn and tear as they lay the foundation of the myth knowing better than you that at the draft's end they will peel it away to make room for the next year's class and the new heroes. So dear reader when you watch the draft this Thursday try to keep in mind that it is about those kids-not the money or the schools whose coffers they helped to fill every Saturday of the fall; not the fame nor the accolades which will fade and cannot protect them from injury or failure. Try not to think about the depravity that is part and parcel of the process... the taint of a particularly peculiar voyeurism that only television and sports can wed together so well. And if you have the time or the mind to wonder what it is about us as a species that has no qualm about turning young men into human stock: assigned a valuation, to be traded and easily discarded; to be used as hedge for the future and atonement for the past failures of other young men who like themselves were also once the future.

There are currently 14.9 million people unemployed in this country...There are enough hard luck and heartbreaking tales to swell oceans to overflow and enough reasons for people who are truly drowning to steal.

When you are making four hundred thousand dollars and just received a 2 million dollar signing bonus currently pitch for the Cincinnati Reds and had in your pocket 40,000 dollars what reason could you have to steal 60.00 worth of shirts on sale by the way for 9.98 from the local Macy's?

Now it could be that you are simply an idiot or maybe a klepto however in the rarefied world of

professional sports it is hard to know when you refuse to explain what possible reason you might have had...It is even harder when your manager makes excuses and alludes to your strange and questionable behavior by speaking in euphemism and banal generalities.

I do not know Mike leake and as far as the Police Blotter that professional sports can sometimes be this particular incident barely ranks save as fodder for late night jokes and snide asides but it should along with more egregious examples cf.-(Mark McGuire,Sammy Sosa testifying before congress on the issues of steroids)point out that the endless mantra that sports builds character is a crock of shit.

What sports seems to teach is how to dissemble while looking sincere...How to avoid and obfuscate while offering platitudes and cliché.

When the New York Met's staged their great collapse of 2007 with a reprise in 2008 where was the character in stumbling responses and dazed looks...where were the leaders who could speak with boldness and straight truth?

When Michael Vick had to finally admit that he was a lying pos who actively engaged in the killing of dogs where was the character that sports supposedly teaches young men(we'll leave for another time what lessons of character college athletes learn when head coaches who recruit them making all sorts of promises while playing the role of daddy or big brother bolt the team for more money and power while dripping wet with crocodile tears and sincere apologia.)

Do not misunderstand me...I am not looking for Mike Leake to be held up for ridicule to assuage some misplaced sense of truth or justice that would be better left for the McGuire's et al no...What I want is just once after an athlete has fucked up is to hear that person say so plainly and without the smell of p.r. spin just as I would like to hear a football or basketball head coach admit that he/she is leaving their current position for the money and those kids that he/she recruited with the promise that he/she would be there was as they say in Hollywood: standard operating bullshit.

Just once somewhere between the monotone cliché and endless sports speak I would like to see some character on display and barring that put to rest this notion that sports and character are somehow co-joined in a Frank Capra way....Glen Beck not withstanding-no one lives in Bedford Falls and George Bailey was never real.

This is for a select few fans which every team has but I will cover the four major Boston teams, being The Red Sox, Celtics,Bruins and the Pats.

This is mainly for fans of other teams to know that not all Boston fans are the same.

Now I support Boston teams 100 percent but some fans make me scratch my head as to why the hell they are there. I mean if your going to proclaim you undying loyalty to a team, I mean for the love of God at least be able to hold a conversation for more than "hes sick", "he sucks", and for the ladies "I love him."

Now the Red Sox are said to have a nation......A "nation" really? Why a nation? And why have a Vermont, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island day at Fenway Park? They are no longer a nation of loyal fans but now one of the biggest bandwagon fans I have ever seen. So this country is now called "The United States of Sox?" Yeah I thought so. Red Sox fans used to love them because the "damn Yanks" spend all that money to win. Well the Red Sox are now right behind them folks and have been for a while. And now every city has Red Sox fans everywhere. I mean someone has to like a winner. In Cleveland their were more Sox fans then Tribe fans. Why? Because they win. The best story I have from a Sox game is when about 5 girls mainly in their 20's had painted faces a billion signs all proclaiming there love for certain players and screaming and yelling and yet completely sober. So as they were screaming, yelling, singing, and well being Sox fans, I got a chance to ask them who their favorite player was. The first answer caused me to go wait what? This girl wearing a Pedro Martinez jersey said "defs Nomar" and i replied oh he was always mine as well. He loved Boston. She replied "thats so cool!" Once he gets healthy and comes up from Pawtucket they will be unstoppable. I burst into laughter as this was a game during the 2010 season against the A's with Nomar in the batters box as she answered. She gave me a look like wow your a fake fan. Well ma'am clearly your another Red Sox dumbass fan.

Now the Bruins. My favorite team, of all and overall. I bleed black and gold, but this will not make me take it easy on them. Bruins fans have always been there but younger fans in their twenties and thirties are well straight up dumb. During games against hated rival Montreal (and boy do I hate them and there fans, sorry Richie) Bruins fans chanted "USA! USA!USA!." HELLO people the Bruins only have one American on their team and the players you cheer for the most are from Canada and Europe and their best player Bergeron is from Montreal. You make hockey fans hate the Bruins team. Sure they boo our anthem up there but its mainly because there the team they hate as well. And when a actual hockey conversation comes up to Bruins fans its mainly" oh man habs suck, suck my d**k, go die, or I will kill you." Not directed at me but at Habs fans. When I was in Montreal for a Bruins game yeah I was heckled but had some good hockey conversations and enjoyed my time. But thank you Bruins fans for ruining home games for me.

Now the Pats. The Pats actually have a very loyal fan base, a lot of who refuse to become Sox fans by following every aspect of the team from the draft to the off-season camps to who gets cut after day one. My only question of them is why must you bitch so much? I mean you have three super bowls in for years and one of the greatest quarterbacks in history playing on your team but you always want more. As a Bruins fan we have sucked forever, I haven't seen a Stanley Cup Final nonetheless three titles. Shut up! I hear on the radio after they lose a game "oh the seasons over, my hearts broken, oh woe is me." Pats fans are spoiled and whiners former players even say it. Heath Evans to the 98.5 "The Sports Hub" "Pats fans are spoiled." Prosecution rests.

Now the Celtics. Oh god. If KG ever reads this he may want to cry to Doc or maybe the Heat with cry with him. KG is too intense. Hello bud you play a sport for a living you wear shorts to work as a grown man. Chill out. But now to their fans. Besides the Sox they have the most bandwagon fans I have EVER seen. The fans loved Scal.....He was the worst player I have ever seen "play" and he made five million a year. Hell I'd like to get paid five million to sit on the bench and wear a suit and get a ring for doing nothing. When I went to Celtics games before they got the big three I paid fifteen dollars to go to a Celtics vs Lakers game, front balcony, at the gate ten minutes before the game! Now you can't get tickets without paying with a body part. I went to every home loss during the 18 game losing streak and was able to move about 25 rows up because there was nobody there. Then you get good players and BOOM, instant fan reaction. They were never mentioned in the news except the losing streak. Lets see how many people show up in three years when your whole team needs walkers to the game. When I went Walter McCarthy was the main attraction, now most C's fans wouldn't know who he is.

This was not meant to be a rant, just to shed light on fans in Boston from a Boston fan point of view. And how some fans embarrass us, and give meaning to the term bandwagon fan.

My 2011 MLB Surprise Team: Baltimore Orioles

Before Buck Showalter took over the Orioles were so bad, I don't even want to post their record pre-Buck era.(cough cough 49-76) When he took over the Orioles towards the end of the 2010 season he had them play above .500, and finished with a 34-23 record. He recently called out the Red Sox saying "I'd like to see how smart Theo Epstein is with the Tampa Bay payroll," Showalter told Men's Journal. Not a smart idea calling out a division rival who is primed to make a serious run at the World Series Championship this coming season, as well as the next 5 years of so as well. This type of move I believe is to motivate his young team to say "wow this guy really believes in us" and get them to play for each other after years of finishing at the basement of the American League East.

They traded away some role players to contenders last season in Ty Wiggington and letting go of underachieving pitchers in Matt Albers, and veteran Kevin Millwood. In this past off season, they went out and signed veterans Derek Lee from Atlanta and Vladimir Guerrero from the Rangers. Vlad coming off of an excellent season where he hit .300 with 29 home runs and 115 RBIs , certainly hitting in the Rangers line up had something to do with those numbers but Camden Yards has a low left field wall for his line drive type home runs. Lee coming off a down year is looking to prove he still has something left in the tank by signing a one year deal, to hopefully give him a chance on the free agent market next winter. You add these to veterans to the already young talent of a Nick Markakis, Adam Jones, Matt Wieters, along with other veterans returning in Luke Scott, and Brian Roberts, and trade acquisitions in strike out prone yet monstrous power third basemen Mark Reynolds and inconsistent shortstop JJ Hardy who also has some power in his bat.

But pitching is another story, every year we hear about how these young pitchers are finally going to step up and deliver. We have seen the likes of Daniel Cabrera with a cannon arm but no control whatsoever, Matt Albers and Radames Liz all never lived up to expectations let alone triple A expectations. If the current staff which consists of Jamie Guthrie, Brad Bergersen, Brian Matusz, Jake Arrieta, and Chris Tillman can provide average pitching, and that's a BIG if, then the Orioles can be a competitive team who can make the playoffs.

The best MLB players at every position since 2000 (Catcher)

This is my first blog on this site. I hope to spark plenty of debate. What better way to do that than making a list? If you are like me, not only are you getting turned down by every girl you went to school with after reuniting with them on Facebook but you also think 2000 was just yesterday. It has been a while now. There is only one manager who is still managing the same team (The incredibly arrogant Tony La Russa). I sat down the other day and asked myself if I were to make the best possible team from 2000 until now who would I choose? There are a couple of slam dunks here but there are some that will get you saying "This fat bastard has no idea what he is talking about". Now, some of you may not know who I am but sooner or later I am going to type something that will show I'm more Earthquake and Typhoon than The Legion of Doom.

Here is the criteria. I don't give a Shaun Suisham field goal about alleged steroid use or if you got caught using them. There is so much hypocrisy behind that. Professional sports, apparently, is the only job where it is wrong to take a pill to make more money. Who wouldn't? I would take a pill to write this blog better. I am pretty sure a lot of you out there would take a drug to make you better parents and Wacka Flacka would jump on the chance to OD for the sake of being a better rapper. What is the difference?

All stats also come from 2000 until now. Your winning the MVP in 1995 will do zilch on this list. I Winning awards from 2000 on though helps, needless to type/say/read. I am taking one player from each position except starting pitcher, I am taking two. Here we go with the list....

Catcher: Nominees Joe Mauer, Minnesota Twins Ivan Rodriguez (Your team here) and Mike Piazza Mets.

One is the best hitting catcher right now, the other was the best hitting catcher before him and the third was/is the best defensive catcher any of us have ever seen.

Piazza's numbers are more impressive in the 90s. His average from 2000 til his retirement are still a very good 283/26/81/357. He made 5 All-Star games and won 6 Silver Slugger awards during this time. His work behind the plate, however, leaves much to be desired. Everyone ran on this guy. He was also handling pitching staffs who had good ERAs. I am a die hard Yankee fan. While I do not hate the Mets, I also do not care for them. With that being said he carried that lineup. Think about the outfield of that World Series team. Benny Agbayani, Timo Perez, Daryl Hamilton, Jay Payton.... How did they even win? He also had the most non clutch clutch moment, hitting the home run against Atlanta in the first game in New York after 9/11.

Mauer has a very healthy line of 323/11/67/401. His power numbers jump if you take away his first season in the show, where he only played 35 games to 15 HRs and 75 RBIs. He has 4 Silver Sluggers and 4 All-Star selections. He also has 3 Gold Gloves, which seperates him from Piazza a little. He also has a good number of post season appearances.

While everyone wanted to run on Piazza, NO ONE wanted to go on Pudge. His reputation probably helped him get by for a few years before everyone realized he was mortal, but he was still nasty for awhile. His offensive numbers are not far behind either with a 295/15/62/330 line. He was also voted into the All-Star Game 5 times, won 4 Silver Sluggers and 5 Gold Glove awards. He also won everywhere he went. He went to Florida and they won a World Series, signed with Detroit and they went to World series. Now all of that wasn't him, but the man is obviously a winner. Those were young teams and teams no one really looked at as a contender.

When I first started this, I thought Piazza was far and away the best. After reviewing the numbers, he actually comes in third in my book. He has the best power numbers but comes in last everyhere else.

It comes down to Rodriguez and Mauer. Mauer has seasons hitting over 340 since 2000. Pudge had some big offseason numbers in the late 90s and a couple of good ones at the beginning of the century but not as good as Mauers. It is still very good. Over 300 average, around 20 HRs and 70 RBIs not to mention a rocket arm. This surprised me a little, but I am going to go with the all around backstop here.

Best catcher since 2000... Ivan Rodriguez.

Derrick Rose makes case for MVP

Back in September, Derrick Rose was asked what his expectations were for himself this season. His response? "Why can't I be MVP of the league? Why can't I be the best player in the league?" Some people scoffed at the thought. But its true. Why can't he?

He's averaging 24.4 PPG, 4.6 RPG, and 8.1 APG, making vast improvements to his game this season and has led his team to a 33-14 record so far, good for 3rd place in the east. And unlike players on the top teams in the league, he's done this without much help. Teams like the Spurs, Celtics, Heat, and Lakers are all stacked in terms of good players. The Bulls have been missing 2 of their top players, Carlos Boozer (has missed 18 games) and Joakim Noah (23 games).

He's been willing the Bulls to wins when the rest of the team was struggling, and he's led his team with his all-around play. He's taking-and making-much more three's than last season, and also shooting free throws much better. But perhaps his most important improvement is his defense, which is the part of his game that was most criticized in the past. Rose allows only 0.77 points per possession overall on defense this season. This handily beats Chris Paul (0.86 points per possession allowed), Rajon Rondo (0.83 PPP allowed), and Russell Westbrook (0.92 PPP allowed), who are 3 of the best defensive PG's in the league. He's become the best defender on one of the best defensive teams in the league.

So, couple his great offensive play, his teams record, and the fact that he's been pretty much alone (save for Luol Deng) for most of the season, can you really deny Derrick Rose his MVP award?

Does he deserve a second chance?

Former Titans quarterback Vince Young has been the center of controversy in Nashville, and even in the national media, for almost the entire season. The questions that surround him are, Does he deserve a second chance? Did he quit? Are the reactions he had justified?

As a die hard Titans fan, this season was a tough pill to swallow. We started out 5-2, number 1 in the AFC South, and looked really strong. But after falling to the Chargers, Dolphins, and Redskins, the team began to crumble. During the Redskins game, he was benched after hurting his finger on his throwing hand. After Fisher refused to let him go back in, VY threw a tantrum in the locker room, cussed out Fisher, and told him he was giving up on him.

The week that ensued was chaotic. Young was locked out of the training facility, texted an apology (that was shot down) to Fisher, and the media had a crisis.

But ya'll know this, don't you?

In the wake of releasing Young, many ask, does he deserve a second chance?

My answer to that question is, he already had his chances.

He was benched after a meltdown at home against the Jaguars, causing a "suicide scare" (which was garbage), and he was benched against the Skins this year.

The guy has lost his job twice. He cussed out his coach. He essentially walked out and gave up on his team. He caused a rift in the locker room that divided that team and ultimately led to their downfall. You were either for him or for Fisher. The team gave up, half assed the rest of the season, and won 1/5 games after the meltdown.

He may have a winning record, but those numbers are skewed. He didn't play for an entire season and a half, so who's to say that he would have a winning record if he played every single game? When it matters, he crumbles. We had a chance to go to the playoffs in 08, after he led us from 0-6-8-8, but at home against the Chargers, he fell apart. When it doesn't matter, he's fine. When the season is on the line, he can't handle it.

This season the crowd at LP booed not only him, but the entire offense when we played the Redskins. He took it personally and stormed off the field. In 08 against the Jags, he got upset after the crowd booed him, and once again took it personally.

Many say Fisher didn't give him a chance. He did. He gave him the chances any other coach would after benching him twice. Many say he trusted Kerry Collins more even though Collins didn't have the numbers that Young did. He trusted the quarterback with the work ethic. The one who showed up for work on time, didn't party during game week, and stayed at the facility 12 hours a day.

I guess I speak as a Titans fan who is tired of the bullcrap. I can safely speak for the majority of fans who are ready to win, and are sick of immaturity. This is the NFL. These are the big boys. It's time to put your big boy pants on and show the nation that you aren't a spoiled brat who was used to getting everything he wanted in college, but didn't in the pros.

That's the number of times Jay Cutler was sack this season on the field and still made 15 starts. 1.6 million to countless, That's the number of times Jay Cutler was sack on Twitter 1/23/11, For leaving the game in 3rd Quarter because of injury (I was among those tweeting about Cutler but I'm an asshole and I had to have fun with it).

Why? Most twitters did it for comedy (Even though someone getting is not joke but than again, I'm an asshole I guess) but others (Fans & Players) took it as a sign of softness. Why? Well because half these motherfuckers never played a sport with injury. Players taking shots at Cutler is the saddest part about this. I understand there a "Warrior" mentality in sports but if a player can't help his team and risk more injury, why kill him for it.

The Bears had the 2nd worse offensive line (Seahawks were worse) in these playoffs and show once again. Packers had pressure on Cutler all day and hit him about 7-8 times before leaving with an torn ligament in knee.

Jay Cutler stat line- 6/14 80yds 0TD 1INT with 31.8rating, Shows he wasn't being effective when playing. He was clearly hurting his team more than helping. I would want my QB to leave because of injury and not hurt the team even more (Right 08 Jets Brett Favre?)

He was replacing a legend in Denver, Took heat from Broncos fans when he demanded a trade, 87 sacks taken the two season with Bears. and now when he bounces back from the heat he has taken from his peers (Note: None of these jerks are even in the playoffs but talking shit) by tearing up the league for years to come.

First off let me state a fact, Al Davis just doesn't give a fuck about what we think.

Since the 60's, Al Davis has made plenty of enemies. He went against the NFL as the AFL commissioner because he was passionate they would become the superior league. A few years after the NFL & AFL merger, Davis would basically steal Raiders ownership from Wayne Valley (It was upheld by law), he would also have countless lawsuits against the NFL for various reasons, and his most famous feud was against former NFL commissioner Pete Rozelle (60',89'). Most of Al's feuds were cause by the passion he had for his Raiders.

Maybe I'm wrong (Since I'm only 26yrs old) but in Al Davis glory years I imagine no one questioned his management skills (Maybe the Ken Stabler trade but that worked just fine) because of the Raiders success. 5 AFC championships (76,80,83,02), 3 Super Bowl wins (76,80,83). In fact, from 1963 until 2002 the Raiders only had 7 losing seasons. And not many people question success, right Bill Belichick? (Spygate ;)

Losing (Raiders haven't had a winning season since 2002) can create a perception about a person. In which case, It happened to Al Davis. Don't get me wrong, Davis has done plenty of dumb shit in the last 8yrs. Trading away a young and successful head coach in Jon Gruden (Would have been in the Super Bowl, If it wasn't for the DUMBEST FUCKING RULE IN FOOTBALL HISTORY' "Tuck Rule"). Since Gruden, Davis has gone through Norv Turner, Art Shell, Lane Kiffin, Tom Cable as head coaches and just hired Hue Jackson. Drafting talented but over weight/under motivated/Eddy Curry clone Jamarcus Russell with the #1 overall pick. To call Al Davis an idiot is idiotic.

SI writer Ann Killion wrote "But there's no moving on. There is only holding tight to transgressions and grudges and then airing them for public viewing and vindication. That's the Raiders version of normal." Because Davis was ripping ex coach Tom Cable at Hue Jackson introductory presser and among other things. Some people view it as bitching, but I view it as truth/passionate (there that word again). I thought we wanted our owners/athletes to be truthful/passionate about their careers.

Al Davis wasn't born Johann Schmidt and murdered a Jewish girl he was once in love with. Davis wasn't Adolf Hitler right-hand man and lead Nazi terrorist activities. Everyone needs to stop being Captain American and trying to save the Raiders from a man who looks like,

Let Allen "Al" Davis 48 seasons* of passionate work continue until success of the Raiders reigns again or his death.

*Out of 48 Seasons, only 14 have been losing seasons and If that's "The Raiders version of normal." Well shit, I want that for my J.E.T.S JETS JETS JETS.

The Element of Trash Talk

A lot of people wrote Rex Ryan off after the debacle against New England week 14. A lot of people scoffed at his trash talk, saying the Patriots would surely beat them again, and just as badly. A lot of people think he's just a loudmouth who needs to learn to keep his trap shut.
I don't.
I love the way Rex Ryan coaches. In his 2 years as head coach, he has brought the Jets to an AFC Championship 2 years in a row. He takes the pressure off of his quarterback by throwing himself under the bus. He knew he was outcoached the last time they met, and he owned it. He isn't one to mince words; He says what everyone is thinking- "It's personal."
I think a lot of coaches should take a leaf out of his book. He knows how good his team is, and he proved that tonight. He also proved he can beat the team that was predicted to go to the Super Bowl.
Looks like he can back his trash talk up, and that's what counts, right?
